But that isn't an abnormally large number for XP to be starting so if you aren't having any problems, why mess with it?

9X (95/98/ME) - yes, absolutely. Minimize the amount of stuff firing off at startup.

NT (NT4/2K/XP) - not nearly as important. And with 5 svchost.exe
showing up, you don't really know what all is running since svchost.exe is a "holder" for other running pieces and may contain from 2 to maybe a half dozen or more other processes.

You might want to get The BootVis Tool from Microsoft and get a good idea of exactly what is loading and, more importantly, how long it takes to load. You can also use BootVis to optimize the placement of files on the Hard Disk to speed up booting and resumes.

    Newt's right

While the W9x family (that includes WME) were all RESOUCE based. XP is an "upgraded" extension of W2K and is "SERVICES" based.

Alot of the "old" tweaking methods don't apply to XP.
