Resolved MS Word - Possible to 'copy to' a doc instead of 'save-as'?

    While working on a document, I'd like to be able to copy it to another location.

    Hang on - don't rush into print just yet :)
    I'm aware that I can 'save-as' the doc, and I can also minimize Word and drag a doc copy to another location.

    This isn't what I mean. What I'd like to do - if it's possible - is, while working on a document, click on a Tool and select say, 'Copy To' and then select a location for the copy to be sent to.

    Anyone know if this is possible? I've had a look at the available tools via the 'Customize' option and can't see anything that looks like this.

    I'm using Word 2003 but I can easily load 2007 or 2010 if either of them have such a facility.

    I know you can highlight it, right click and choose copy and then put it where you want it at.

    Thanks but that's not the solution. You have to go Ctrl\A, Ctrl\C - go to the target location, open a new Word doc, Ctrl\V, then rename the new doc. Even more long-winded than Save-As.
    Nope - it's possible that the facility I'd like doesn't exist. Pity.

    Hi masonite, I'm using MS Word 2007 and if you click on Save as icon (top left) it opens and at the bottom of the Pane > Tools > have a look in there. There appears to be lots of different things you can do.
    Let's know if any suit your requirements. Neil.

    Thanks Neil. I'll install 2007 on another machine and take a took at it. The limitations of Save-As, in Word 2003 anyway, is that you end up working out of the Save-As location from that point on.
    Like, say you start a document called blah.doc in a folder called C:\Docs\Assorted. You save there from to time to time as you work. Then, you have to leave what you're doing for a spell, so, just in case of earthquakes, floods or nuclear attack, you save the doc once more, then Save-As into another location, like an external drive.
    When you return, and resume the still-open document, you're no longer working on the original, but on the external drive's doc copy. OK, so you track down your original location and go to save it there and you get the message, "Hey, this doc's already here. You wanna overwrite it?" I won't go on but there's more fiddling before you get back to where you were.
    How much easier if you could just say, "Copy this doc to drive X and maybe also to drive Y "? Then, just resume your original, secure in the knowledge that the doc hasn't been upset by the hiatus and that you have one or two backup copies elsewhere.
    The more I think about it, the more surprised I am that this facility hasn't been included in Word. The closest thing to it is File > Send to Mail Recipient, which would be better than nothing, but it doesn't seem to be operative. Duh.

    If I understand correctly what you want, you don't want to lose the changes you have made to a doc in the event you've left the doc opened and went away from the computer.

    If you want multiple saved versions of docs as you edit it, you'll have to use Save-As, and to best keep them organized, amend its file name with something like date-time. example:
    my-resume-2012-11-21-6:55.doc

    Else search Word Help system for autosave or read this.

    Never mind - I'll just keep on with the various workarounds.

    It may be what you want is "sequential save. "

    Take a look at Saving Sequentially-Numbered Documents in Word to see if that's what you're looking for.

    If not, I found that page using the search term sequential save word document.

    Thanks Miz. That's not quite what I was looking for but the answer is probably some kind of macro or vba script that says, 'Copy this doc to x'.
    A tool would have been ideal, of course :)

    This may be too simple or I'm overlooking something, but when I need to do this, with the document open in Word, I open the File>Open dialog box, right-click on the document's file name and choose Copy To and pick a folder to place the copy in.

    Will this do the job?
