    Hello all!

I copied pages from one document into another existing document. I saved when exiting. Now, each time I open the document, even if I made no changes, not even scrolled or anything else, MS Word prompts to save changes.

I have experienced this before but I can not remember how I fixed it. Anyone out there with a less used memory than mine?

    Thanks for your time,
    Christer

I saved the document under a different name. The copy behaved in the same way. After removing all formatting and saving, the document behaves as it should (no prompt to save changes when none were made). What in the copying process (pages from one document to another) would mess up the formatting?

Needless to say ... :( ... I'd rather NOT remove the formatting!

I have fooled around in that document and the problem seems to be with some (not all) of the sections that are centered. When five (specific) out of seven of those sections are deleted, the document works as it should.

I have copied and pasted in and out of that document quite a lot ... ... maybe there is a limit to what MS Word can take ... ... but I don't understand why.

I'm still interested in knowing how it can be avoided, if someone has the "know-how-not "!

Page size can do some funny things. Were the documents created and then edited on different PCs? Specific page size is tied to some extent to your default printer settings. You often get prompted for a document save after printing because of the subtle page size changes Word makes to accommodate a different printer. It might be worth looking at you page set up and printer settings.

If you are like me, A4 is your standard print size. Being American, Word's default is letter size. So that could be another thing to check. You may get some formatting issues if you cut from a page set up for Word's default of letter, to a document set up for your format of A4.

It's times like this when I yearn for the good old days of DOS word-processing, where every formatting tag was accessible and easily edited.

Oh, this may be heresy, but I'm surprised how often opening a Word document in OpenOffice, and then saving it fixes formatting problems. Of course it can add some new problems, but worth a try.

    Reggie,

Well, on the same hardware but different software ... :p ... ! The original document was created on this PC when it was running WinME and Off2K.

When I migrated to WinXP and OffXP, the first trouble when working with those documents was that I had been using a font which was not available in OffXP. If I remember correctly, it was named "Britannic Bold" or something like that. It asked to save on each exit even if no changes had been made but when I changed the font to Times New Roman, the documents behaved normally.

The printer is the same trusted HP DeskJet 930.

Both Off2K and OffXP are swedish versions and they have always defaulted to A4.

I fixed the problem by removing the offending centered head lines and retyping them. Lucky me that there was only seven of them and not a lot of formatting to investigate.

    Steve,
I'll check out that KB article later. I still have a copy of the un-fixed document to play with.

    Thanks guys,
    Christer

    Steve,

I followed the steps in KB816473

and it worked. When I reenabled "Smart Tags ", the problem reoccurred which means that they were not "removed" from the document when it was saved. They were just not "used ".

To be honest, I have no idea if "Smart Tags" are useful to me (personally) but since they are enabled by default, they probably do something.

Could it be that "Smart Tags" are different in Off2K compared to OffXP?
