    Hello,

I am having a problem with my Wheel Mouse Optical 1.1A USB on Win XP on my IBM R51 Laptop. My mouse is about 8 months old & yes I did test it on another computer & seems to work fine on it, I'm having issues on my laptop only. I did remove USB HUB drivers & self installation on start up but no luck with that. I also followed these steps:

    http://support.microsoft.com/?scid=kb;en-us;321122#kb1

I really tought this would of fixed it but my MS wheel mouse optical 1.1a still stops after minutes using it. I also notice that it wont stop as much if I dont have allot of programs open. Is it a registry issue? or files are missing on start up? Was this caused by a Virus and corrupted some files? I have read so much about this problem & seems no one could figure this out. I will connect it to my PS2 once I get an adaptor for it. Please if anyone knows any fix about this problem, pls share it with me so I could stop pulling my hair of my head, LOL:)

    Thx,
    Stephan

    stephan99 - Welcome to the Board :)

You need to determine if the problem is caused by the mouse or the computer. Which OS are you using - XP, 98 ...?

Can you try another mouse on the laptop? If you have the same problem it is fairly certain that the problem lies in the computer.

Have you tried using another USB port - it is not unknown for USB ports to become faulty - mechanically. Do you have anything else plugged into the USB ports?
    and the controllers?

If you have folowed the instructions in the MS KB article it is unlikely to be a software problem although the possibility remains.

In the past all MS USB mice came with a USB to PS2 converter out of the box - has this changed? It will be interesting to hear if the mouse works on PS2.

Does the touch pad or it's equivalent still function and does turning this off resolve the problem?

If have the Intellipoint software installed, remove it via add-remove programs and don't reinstall it. All you need is the drivers which xp will install automatically anyway.

If don't have Intellipoint software installed, try installing it and using it, it may correct your issues.

    Hi Pete,

Thanks for the warm welcome. As I type this my mouse is not working:) Yes I did remove controllers, I have Win XP. I have tried this Optical mouse on my other PC and it works fine. I dont have another mouse to try on this laptop so I cant test that. I only have the mouse plugged in my usb. As for the touchpad I did disable it once & the problem was still there. My guess, it could be a USB issue or a driver issue in my registry. I will test it with another mouse & I will also try PS2 connection & let u know how it goes.

    Regards,
    Stephan

I wonder if it would be worth trying to make up a new user account and see if it runs OK there.

Try going to Safe Mode. Uninstall any Intellimouse software, uninstall the mouse drivers and maybe the USB controllers as well.

When you reboot, try installing a standard USB(?) mouse using "I will install the drivers myself using a list ". See what standard drivers are availailable and also what Microsoft drivers are available in the listing. Even changing to standard drivers and then changing back may correct the problem.

    Hi Matt,

Thanks for the info. When you are saying uninstall mouse drivers in safe mode, are you talking about the ones in my registry? for ex:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E96F-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318} Mice and other poiting devices

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{745A17A0-74D3-11D0-B6FE-00A0C90F57DA} Human Interface Defices

is this normal to have different type of Driver versions? maybe thats where the conflicts lies? What happens if i delete this from my registry?

    Driver Version 5.20.413.0
    Driver Version 7.5.17.18
    Driver Version 4.0.0.657
    Driver Version 5.1.2600.0
    Driver Version 5.50.661.0

Im pretty sure that my problem is with my registry because i have tried most of the things that have been mention in the thread.

    Thx,
    Stephan

    Hi,

Just to keep up to date with my mouse problems. Here is an interesting thread about this:
    http://forums.wugnet.com/Mouse-stops-working-ftopict428367.html

I removed some programs in my start up & so far the mouse seems to work so far. Maybe I had programs that were starting that were conflicting with the mouse drivers or i was using to much memory on start and it was affecting the mouse. I hope this will fix my problem.

    Stephan
