[Resolved]MS Visual C++ Runtime Library Error

    Hello,
I've seen this problem in many flavors, but can't seem to fix my problem. I keep getting an error message:

    Runtime Error!
    Program: ...\Symantec Client Security\Symantec AntiVirus\Rtvscan.exe
This application has requested the Runtime to terminate in an unusual way. Please contact application support....

Occasionally I'll get a message indicating that Symantec Auto Protect has been disabled, but upon further review, it's still enabled.

It seems like it began after I added the AntiVirus Engine to Spyware Doctor. I've tried uninstalling/reinstalling Symantec with no luck.

Oddly, the frequency of the error drops after I run Deckard System Scanner.

I greatly appreciate any assistance you can provide!

    Hi wacheboarder
I don't see anything in your log that jumps out at me.

I've asked a Norton tech support person to have a look here.

We'll see what he has to say.

    Geri

    Thanks, I appreciate your help!

I find it very strange that running Deckard System Scanner slows the rate of the errors down to once or twice a day. Otherwise, the errors pop constantly.

    Hi
While we're waiting for Michael York from Norton.

OK Mike has shown up, so please do his instructions first to see if the problem will be resolved.

    Please do this.

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune.
This program is for XP and Windows 2000 only

    • Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
      Under Main choose: Select All
      Click the Empty Selected button.
    If you use Firefox browser
    • Click Firefox at the top and choose: Select All
      Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
    If you use Opera browser
    • Click Opera at the top and choose: Select All
      Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.
For Technical Support, double-click the e-mail address located at the bottom of each menu.

Then run Deckard System scanner and post the log.

    Geri

    Hi wacheboarder,

This is Mike from the Norton Authorized Support team.

While I can not analyze your log, I can assist you with the Runtime error you are receiving.

This error points to corruption in the LiveUpdate cache, which stores the updates that are automatically applied to Norton. Since you mention that you tried to remove and reinstall Norton, most likely your installation of Norton is is corrupt.

Which Norton product and version do you have installed?

If you are using Norton Internet Security or Norton 360, they both contain a full firewall and virus, spyware, and other features to keep you protected and therefore adding additional third-party security software can result in slowdowns and other problems such as this one.

First, please remove Spyware doctor from Add/Remove and then reboot your computer. Also, make sure that you do not have any other third-party antivirus or security applications installed, as having more than one antivirus and internet security application will cause conflicts and will leave your system vulnerable to infection.

Next, follow the steps below to properly remove your Norton product and then reinstall, update and perform a Full System Scan to check for infections.

    1. Click on the following link to download the Norton Removal Tool:

    Norton Removal Tool and Instructions

    2. After you run the tool, please restart your computer. Then log in to Windows again and run the removal tool again. Restart your computer after it is finished running the second time as well.

    3. Make sure that your internet connection is working properly, and then reinstall your Norton product. Towards the end of the installation process, the LiveUpdate feature will automatically run and download and install updates to both the program files and definition files.

    4. When the installation is complete, open your Norton product and manually run LiveUpdate to check for any more available updates. When this is complete, perform a "Full System Scan" with Norton.

Please let me know which Norton product you are using and also the outcome of the uninstall/reinstall and scan.

    Thanks,
    Mike

I removed Spyware Doctor and rebooted. The error used to appear as soon as I logged into Windows. After removing SD, I haven't seen the error. I've rebooted a few more times and still no error!

Therefore, I didn't remove Norton. I've did run live update and everything is up to date and appears fine. I'll keep my fingers crossed.

    Thanks for the assistance!
