On my Win'98 PC I have to continually install the above Critical Update. Four times today!!

At first I thought it was because of a program I am using named Registry Healer. After several hours of checking and re-checking I have determined that this was not the culprit.

I ran Registry Healer right after once again installing the update but I made sure that I did NOT delete any corrections found. I immediately went back to the Windows Update page and after a scanning I was requested to download and install the patch.

I also run this program on my Win XP machine and I have no problems like this.

BTW, where are the updates stored on '98? In XP I can find the list in the Add/Remove folder.

    Thanks.

vegaspat--In Control Panel|Add/Remove does this patch show under Windows 98? If yes, Remove it, reboot and then reinstall.
If it then again appears in Add/Remove, and also appears when you run qfecheck.exe, it would seem it is installed and you may just have to live with the situation. (There is a possible fix in modifying your Registry, but let's worry about that only if you cannot stand it.)
On the other hand if it is not in Add/Remove or show in the qfecheck log, then post back, since the patch does not seem to be installing.
Where are these patches stored on your PC? See the info on which files the patch has added for your version of Windows here

    Jim,

So sorry, but I just saw your response. I think I must have my e-mail notification turned off.

I am going to print off your note and check it out. I will get back to you shortly.

    Thanks and sorry.

Download 823559 to your desktop. Then uninstall all listing of the update, then turn off your antivirus, then install update from your desktop. Should solve the problem.

Thanks. I haven't even gotten to the other suggestion. Too many irons in the fire.

I usually use Windows Update to get the patches, etc. but I suppose as to your suggestion, I will have to go to the MS site and download it from there since Update doesn't allow to save where I want to?

Okay, folks.... I manually downloaded the update and installed it myself. So far, so good.

If it disappears again, I guess I'll just let it go. Far too much trouble. I just wonder why it disappears after a few days?

    Thanks for everyone's time.

BTW, I did delete it from Add/Remove before I manually installed it. Maybe that will do the trick.

In re-reading your posts here, I noticed that an item named qfecheck.exe was mentioned. When I couldn't find it on either my XP or "98 PC, I did some searching.

On the MS site there was a downloadable file available.

Is this something I need or even be concerned about? I don't want anymore problems around here.

vegaspat--qfecheck.exe is a handy program for Win98 to tell you, in one place, what MS patches have been installed. Windows Update Installation History often does not include what has been installed by means other than going through WU.
I do not know if it works or is needed with WinXP.

    Thanks.

I noticed that there was one for XP also. But I usually have no problem with finding the updates for XP.
