I just received the MS Security Update CD (February 2004) and the Computer Associates eTrust AntiVirus and Firewall Software Trial CD.
    Questions:
    1. I ran the MS Critical Updates and there were no updates to install (I usually run this every week or so). Is there a reason to install the CD just received? Or just save it for future emergencies, like a "crash" or re-install Win 98SE?
    2. I use Avast AntiVirus and am completely satisfied with th program. It auo updates the virus definitions for me. I also use ZoneAlarm (free) and have had no trouble with the program.
The Trial Software is free for one year. Is it worth uninstlling Avast and ZA to install and use the trial software.
(my "upbringing" always tells me "if it ain't broke, don't fix it ", and therefore I'm inclined to ignore the trial softare, and just hold on the CD).
I'd appreciate any comments and suggestions. I'm sure others can gain from answers I receive on this.

    Hello Irving,

*1. I ran the MS Critical Updates and there were no updates to install (I usually run this every week or so). Is there a reason to install the CD just received? Or just save it for future emergencies, like a "crash" or re-install Win 98SE?*

If you've kept the OS updated, no need to install updates. Would come in handy if you had to reinstall 98 because by applying the updates after that from the CD w/o having to go on-line for them would be both safer and faster even though the updates are only up to 10/03 (I think) and then after that picking up the rest at MS.

*2. I use Avast AntiVirus and am completely satisfied with th program. It auo updates the virus definitions for me. I also use ZoneAlarm (free) and have had no trouble with the program.*

This is your call, if you want a learning curve, then try it. The eTrust will also update etc. as well, but if you're satisfied with Avast, keep it.

Etrust's firewall is a relabled earlier version of ZA PRO, not sure exactly which version, but pre 4.x (rule making version). I would keep your ZA.

    Regards - Charles

    Agree with charlesvar's comments
but would add that many of the security updates also would be useful if you reinstall Internet Explorer.

I agree, just keep the Security CD stored with your OS CD. If you need to format and install, it is now easier to do the updates that were available up to October 2003 for 98, 98Se, ME, and XP. I am aware there is a February 2004 date on the CD, but the updates are not that recent.
Stay with Avast, the EZ Trust that comes with it has no real email scanning, or none I could find. The closest it comes to that is if you install the firewall, and it has the same Mail Safe you are aware of in ZA. A renamed ZA firewall is all it is.

The Security CD is up to date as of some undefined date in October 2003.
