About once a week when I restart my computer I get a popup Security Essentials window saying "Windows Failed to Pass Validation. Security Essentials will cease to work in 30 days. Go online now to resolve the issue." [Wording not exact.]

When I close the popup and go into MSSE I used to find it a warning red/orange with a link titled "Run validation check ", which when clicked, appeared to resolve the issue.

Now, after (and presumably because) I went online and downloded the WGA plugin I still get the popup, but when I go into MSSE all is well.

This started after I migrated my system to a new hard drive.

How can I stop the popup?

    Thanks, ral

    2 common causes:

    1. validate your copy of windows if not yet done

    2. set the correct time, time zone and date.

validation will fail if no. 2 above is not done.

    Thank you.

I have followed both your suggestions (I was surprised to learn that Windows Genuine Advantage did not in fact validate an XP installation), and will assume the problem is resolved.

MS Security Essentials Keeps Nagging about Validation - Update

The popup was back was back when I did a cold boot this morning, this time after I closed the popup and went into MSSE I again found it a warning red/orange with a link titled "Run validation check ", which when clicked appeared to work, turning the MSSE window green.

I think I will next try uninstalling (using Revo for a thorough uninstall) and reinstalling MSSE.

    Thanks, ral

This apparently can also happen if the WGA .dat file is inaccessible for MSE.

    To check:

    • Log in with an administrator account
    • Open Windows Explorer and select Tools > Folder Options from the menu
    • From the View tab, check Show hidden files and folders below Hidden files and folders
    • Click to clear the Hide extensions for known file types check box, and then click OK
    • Navigate to C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Windows Genuine Advantage\data
    • Right-click the data.dat file, select Properties and click the Security tab
    • Click the Advanced button
    • Under the Permissions entries, check in the Name column and see if Everyone is listed
    • If Everyone is listed, select the entry & click the Edit button and make sure Full Control has Allow checked
    • If Everyone is not listed, click the Add button, enter the name Everyone, press Enter from your keyboard, click Allow next to Full Control in the Permission Entry window, and click OK several times to close all open windows.

    All done (verified, actually).
There is no Security tab, only General. Is that because I have XP Home, not Professional?

I notice, however, that it says:
    --- Opens with: Unknown application.
Could I try changing it to:
    --- C:\Program Files\Microsoft Security Client\msseces.exe
(guessing - I can't find another exe for Security Essentials)?

Yes. Your profile didn't specify Home or Pro so I hoped for the best :)

    I'll get a workaround.

    No you can't!

To get the Security tab in XP home, boot (with an Administrator account) in Safe mode.

This also assumes you have NTFS as your file system.

    I don't. I use fat32 (because I use DOS frequently).

Run the MGADiag tool (download and save to desktop).

    • Once downloaded, run the tool
    • Click on the Continue button, after a short time, the Continue button will change to a Copy button
    • Click on the Copy button in the tool (ignore any error messages at this point), and then paste (using either right-click > Paste, or Ctrl+V ) into your next reply.

I've ended up calling MS in the past in order to validate after changing drives.

How did you "migrate" ? Clean install?

Your computer has a Volume License (VL) edition of Office XP Professional with FrontPage identified. As a rule, VL editions should not be sold to individual consumers. Businesses, schools and governments normally use VL editions for flexibility in installing many computers. Also, Volume Licenses for Windows XP is Upgrade licenses ONLY and cannot be used as the original or base license for a new computer.

    This is showing invalid data.

Please install a new WGA update - KB971033 and post a new MGADiag report.

OK. If you do not mind I will wait til I get another popup. KB971033 is for Win7, and while I have found what I think is appropriate (Windows Genuine Advantage Notifications, WindowsXP-KB905474-ENU-x86.exe), I am sufficiently unsure to fear screwing up my system. The windows update site does not show WGA as high priority or optional.

    Thanks, ral

I'm embarrassed to say I don't remember. I cloned the old disk using EASUS Partition Manager, but I also did a clean install (or two) and I don't remember which I ended up keeping. I know I did have to reactivate, but did not have to reinstall drivers and apps.

    Continuing reply to Arie

The popup recurred but was no help.

Can you verify that the file mentioned above is what I need?

Sorry, I forgot that file was only for Windows 7. Yes, the KB905474 package is for Windows XP.
