Whenever I try to save an image as a .gif in MS Paint, it always results in color loss. Is there any way I can prevent this? I need to save it as a .gif to make the image transparent, but if there's no way I can stop color loss, is there any other way I can make an image transparent?

I am not familiar with Paint as I use Photoshop exclusively, but have noticed a slight colour loss when preparing small jpegs. This can be compensated for by increasing the colour depth (saturation) - a facility I guess does not exist in Paint.

As an alternative try Irfanview - freeware in which I am sure you can control the saturation of the colours.

GIF files can only display 256 colors, so there will nearly always be loss of colors when using it.

    Images Rule of Thumb:

USE .JPG FOR PHOTO-TYPE IMAGES AND USE .GIF FOR IMAGES OF TEXT AND LINE ART OF FEWER COLORS. IF NEED TRANSPARENT HIGH COLOR IMAGES USE .PNG.

Hm, I'll have to try PNG again. IIRC, it didn't work last time I tried.

CPUDude521--How much of a color loss? Complete (like only graytones) or just a partial loss in saturation?

The Gimp is another excellent open source alternative. Easier to use than Irfanview if you want to create or manipulate images to any degree other than simple transformations. Irfanview is good for viewing and batch alterations.

Thanks. I use to have GIMP. I'll just reinstall it.
