I have been using MS Outlook 2007 but due to a windows problem (Windows Explorer stopped working ) I need to recover from the hard drive the .pst files AND also the address book file.

What is the file extension for the address book and where should I look?

I am planning on mounting the hard drive as a secondary drive and recovering the information from there.

    Thanks in advance
    Geoff

Outlook store everything in the PST file... emails, contacts, calendar items etc.

Geoff, I don't think you can find the address book in the manner you are thinking, because the address book is a part of the .pst file. The main issue is to recover the .pst and copy it to your new Outlook install.

I'm not sure if you can access the old C drive files if the harddrive itself has been relegated to storage. I could be wrong on that, so we'll have to wait on someone more experienced to better inform you.

Have you tried to repair Windows Explorer?...

    Windows Explorer has stopped working

If the duff drive is hooked up as a second drive (jumpered Slave if PATA) Windows will see it as a second drive with the next available drive letter.

Recovery of the .pst file should be simple.

    lvr181

The default location of the .pst file (W7) is .....

    C:\Users\Your User Name\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Outlook\Outlook.pst

The drive letter will not be C:\ on the old drive as noted above.

You will need to enable 'View Hidden Files & Folders' to find it.

So you *can* access operating system files on what used to be C drive if mounted as a slave? I didn't know that.

Thank you to all those who gave advice on my "problem ". I will access the .pst files when the drive is mounted as a secondary storage drive, following the path given (recognising it will no longer be C:).
I think a virus has turned off (or deleted) system restore as I cannot start in last known good configuration from Safe Mode. But had not thought of doing an In Place Upgrade. That I will try before tearing out the last remains of what little hair my head has :)
    Thanks once again everyone.

Copied archive.pst and outlook.pst and NO contacts came across!

What has happened? Outlook was working 100% well until windows explorer stop working correctly.

Are you saying that your .pst file has no contacts at all?

I don't suppose you exported a csv (comma separated value) file from Outlook sometime in the past did you? If you did, you can import that same file back into Outlook. Another contact source location could be your internet email provider. Most that I know of will allow you to export a list of contacts in csv format to be imported into Outlook, Outlook Express, Windows Live Mail, etc.

There is no .pab file in Outlook 2007. That file appeared in earlier versions only (before Outlook 2003).

Did you copy over the Outlook.pst file and replace the new one that was created or did you IMPORT from the older pst file?

You could try importing... Just be certain you select the option to NOT allow duplicates.
