I'm an IT Tech in a school and I have a bit of an odd situation where MS Office 2010 Word refuses to save changes to students work.

Office 2010 is definitely activated and all other Office applications save perfectly. Word however, in either a new document or opening and altering an existing document will not save.

Is this some sort of permission issue perhaps because if I'm logged on as an Administrator all is ok?

Going to guess you're getting some sort of message? What does it say?

Does this happen on the local machine or is the save location on the network? Is it a shared document? Does the user have permission to write to the folder in question?

    Thanks Steve,

There is a message pops up when trying to close Word after dumping the save and that's to do with a change in the Global Template:

Changes have been made that affect the global template, Normal. Do you want to save those changes?

Refuses to save that as well - no changes have been made though anyhow?

Does this happen on the local machine

It's on 5 HP Workstations that draw their network wirelessly (Ruckus) - no issues with finding documents or Internet access though so I don't suspect that.

or is the save location on the network? Yes the save is to a Domain

Is it a shared document? No

Does the user have permission to write to the folder in question?

I haven't checked that specifically but as other MS Office 2010 saves are working I'm thinking that if it is that it's somewhere specific to Word?

You might want to seek out the Normal.dotm file and zap it... It'll get recreated next time you Open Word... Course you'd lose any saved custom settings.

    thanks Steve,

Worth a try. No custom changes made so nothing to loose!

    Strange why it's happened though?

I would also run chkdsk /r on the drive, just to be sure that its one off error & the hard disk is ok.

    This issue persists!

It's isolated to five HP Z200 (Product No: kk655et) XP Pro SP3 Workstations. I have tried all suggestions offered and this morning run a repair from the install disk.

No problems for me logged on as an Admin but as soon as I log a student on and open a Word document - make any alterations it refuses to save. No issue with any other MS Office 2010 component.

This suggests to me that it's a permissions issue but where do I need to look?
