MS Office 2000 incompatiblity with Windows XP

I recently purchased a new computer with Windows XP and tried to load my cd of MS Office 2000 that I had been using with my old computer running Windows 98. When I install Office 2000 I get a message that it was installed correctly, but all of the Office applications (Word, Excel, Access, etc) open for just a few seconds and then crash. They just disappear and will not open. I've both reinstalled Office and run the repair function several times plus run the Program Compatability Wizard to no avail. Obviosly something is wrong, and I was wondering if anyone has run into the same problem trying to run Office 2000 on XP.
