A friend (XP Home) would like to have use the MS Games (Solitaire, Freecell, etc.). It appears that they were not installed when the computer was new four or five years ago or they have been lost over the ensuing years.

When I tried to install through Control Panel and Windows Component Add/Remove, I was asked for the XP CD. He doesn't have it. I have a Dell Reinstallation CD, XP Home, Service Pack 2. Could I use that CD to get the game files?

If not, could I copy the respective game files out of my I386 folder into his I386 folder? I was able to locate them all on my computer.

    Goddez1,

I did find your posts and that's where I came up with the question about using my XP CD. I'm always very cautious when using these discs because I'm not sure I know the difference between discs for reinstalling a system and restoring a system. I don't want to put a disc in and then have it start installing or restoring when all I need are the files to get the games going.

Your post in that thread also led me to look at the possibility of copying the game files from my I386 folder. So, I am back to my original question(s). Can I safely use my Dell reinstallation CD? If not, can I simply copy the I386 files?

Try it. No harm can come about as a result. It will either work or you'll get a message like, "This is not the correct media for this comp. "

    Goddez1 and TonyT,

Thanks so much for your input. I inserted my Dell Reinstallation CD when asked and the games loaded with no problem. My friend is happily spending the evening learning Freecell. I will now mark this one "Resolved ". Again - thanks.
