When trying to install a couple of programmes recently, I received the following error message:

C:\Windows\System32\Autoexec.nt The system file is not suitable for running MS-DOS and Microsoft Windows applications. Choose 'Close' to terminate the application.

I looked this up on Microsoft's site for a solution but to be honest I am finding it difficult to follow the instructions - is there an easier way to replace the missing files that are preventing these programmes from installing

Edit note: we are trying to get an idea of exactly where this error originates. The 'fix' that MIZ has posted will work but if you wouldn't mind saving copies of your current (and mal-functioning) autoexec.nt and config.nt files and as autoexec.nt-bad and config.nt-bad and then emailing them, I would greately appreciate it. Needs to be done before doing the fix. Send them as attachments to nvail@ctc.net. Newt

You're in luck. There is an easier way. Go to this page, scroll down to and download XP Fix.exe. Run it according to the instructions on that page. That fixes the sub-system error most of the time.
