My son, a full time college student purchased MS Office Ultimate 2007 via education MS website discount. It also qualifies for free MS Office 2010 update when released. A requisite for free update/Office 2010, Office 2007 must be installed by Sept.15, 2010. The concern I have, I will be building my son a new desktop Dec 2010 / Jan 2011.
We can install Office 2007 on his current laptop now, and upgrade to Office 2010 when available later this year. Will it be legal ALSO install Office 2010 on his 2nd computer I build for him later this year / early next AND continue to use it on his laptop??

The one Student Office cd that I've seen mentioned good for three pc/installls. If all else fails - look for the EULA.txt file.

Thank you for your time and info Steve.
As with anything with MS it can get messy.
Please keep in mind the following questions must be tested over two different computers with installs occurring in 2010 and 2011. These dates may/may not have influence per upgrade eligibility.

    A) Does this mean 3x different computers with unlimited re-install??
    B) Does this mean 3x different computers with (1) install per computer??
    C) Does this mean 3x installs counts, end of subject. One or 3 computers, total install/reinstall count can NOT exceed total of 3.
    D) Does applying "upGRADE to Office 2010" count as part of the original 3 install total.
    E) Will new desktop build in 2011 require 2007 installed before upgrading to Office 2010 or just install Office 2010 and input Product Key string.

Sorry Steve, hate to give you a headache, but MS is always a moving target when it comes to their licensing agreements / multiple computer/installs plus mixed with upGRADE activity/eligibility, including potential date locks. ... and you thought your significant other was the only one providing pain and misery in your life.
One of the problems will be interpreting MS EULA, they do not provide a team of lawyers for guidance and a signed-off agreements for what they say is legal and what we thought was legal. All of this uncertainly influences anyone's decision to just go to "Open Office" and not address these concerns. I paid for this product to assure my son have current MS Office exposure/skill sets when he enters the job market in 2011/2012. ... the one thing Open Office can not provide.

In small print on the backside - bottom of the "Academic Use Only" retail case it says:

Office Home and Student 2007 is licensed for noncommercial use on up to three personal computers. ** Offered in the USA only. **

Very, very SORRY for that Steve.
My only defense is a quote I just posted about myself in another thread last night. I have a condition known as "Brain Dead momentitis ". It is a recently discovered syndrome which takes up temporary residence ... it seems to visit me often. :D

Thanks for the info Steve. I opted for the electronic download (have 2x install exe's archived), saved me $13 on install CD, so did not have / see the CD case / 3 computer install allowance label. Again thank you Steve .... see I remembered you name ;):).

I'm going to mark this thread resolved, but if anyone wants to comment per upgrading from Office 2007 to 2010 on fresh build in 2011 (see above concern per dating) be my guest and any insight would be welcome.

EDIT: Never mind. I just re-read the OP and saw that he was asking a different question. :(

Funny I posted a similar thread over at the MS support forums (not official, of course) and so far nobody from MS has responded.

After a bit of reflection, it seems to me that the "disks" that we would get for the 2010 upgrade are the actual 2010 upgrade disks. If so, then the upgrade on a new computer in 2011 would be simply a typical upgrade from one office version to the next, and would be legal and doable as long as we didn't exceed the limit in the EULA (which for me would not be a problem at all).

I was only hoping that MS wouldn't give us something like an "OEM" copy of Office 2010 that was good only on the machine it was originally installed on, etc.

At this point, my choice is between 2010 for 60 at ultimatesteal, and Office XP on amazon for 20. After uninstalling 2007, I gotta say I haven't missed it and I'm going to give some thought to whether the improvements with 2010 are worth the extra 40 to me. :D
