I have an MPIO FL100 mp3 player which uses "MPIO Manager 2" s/w to transfer mp3 files over the USB interface.

MPIO Mngr 2 worked well on my old Win 98 PC but I just upgraded to a P4 3.2 MHz, 1 gig RAM, ASUS m/b, with Win XP SP2 machine - and when I tried to load the MPIO Mngr 2 s/w the installation wizard errors out after only a few seconds with a msg "Cannot create a file when the file already exists ".

I tried loading the s/w from the MPIO CD and from their web site - both with the same error problem.

The Mngr 2 s/w seems to load OK on some other (older) PCs running XP (not sure of SP version) so it must be a problem with compatability either with my new h/w config or perhaps SP2...?

Any ideas on what the problem is or what I can try?

    Many thanks.

What happens when you attach MPIO FL100 mp3 player to your new XP via USB port. Does XP recognize attached device or a drive?

Thanks Dennis L for your reply.

Good question - unfortuantely the USB port doesn't recognize the device - ie. a notice comes up something about an unrecognized device is trying to connect to the USB port...

I was hoping that if this MPIO player was recognized as a stnd USB interface, as many/most mp3 players now are, I could just transfer mp3 files to the player using Win Explorer - but this particular MPIO unit (model # FL100, about 18 months old) apparently isn't designed in that way.

I checked MPIO's web site for a firmware up-grade that might allow the FL100 to be connected as a stnd USB device but an update doesn't seem to be available.

Hope you have some other ideas...

Check your program versions against these on MPIO Global Support.
Before you download / install any of the programs / drivers, please click on
"List" (to the right of download), which brings up additional information for each update.

Got too busy last night to look at this at home Dennis L - but I'll work on it this weekend.

Interesting that the MPIO support site does have a driver for Win XP "SP2 "!- but I assume that driver is for the MPIO player itself (and not the Manager2 s/w)?

I have downloaded this driver and I'll try to install it tonight, however I'm sure how to do this. Since the player is installed on my new by the Manager2 s/w (which I can't install because of the error), how do I get the new SP2 driver installed (and thereafter hope that it will allow the Maanager2 s/w to properally install)???

I've updated my share of windows drivers but I'm scratching my head how I install/update the driver when the h/w device hasn't yet been installed.

    Any devine guidance?

Support on this site is scattered to say the least.
Reading through FL100 User Manual - English PDF it would appear you first step is to install MPIO Manager2 Ver. 1.8.0.0 . Download to your computer, start install process. Per user manual, you do NOT have MPIO FL100 mp3 player attached to the computer. If installation is successful, (keep fingers crossed) their should be a MPIO icon on the Desktop. Reboot computer, with a USB already attached to computer, power on player and then insert USB connection into player.
Scanning through user's manual / website, the proper sequence (?) to apply program updates are as follows ..
    1) MPIO Manager2 Ver. 1.8.0.0
    2) Device driver 3.0.0.0 for XP SP2 - I hoping your current SP2 system already has this driver. I much prefer devices that provide full functionality using M$ supplied drivers. Only install this if MPIO Manager2 refuses to install -(OR)- XP / USB connection continues to fail. Be sure to re-boot.
    3) FL100 Firmware ver 1.35 - Optional for additional features.

Good luck - Keep us posted.

Great job on organizing the steps for installing the MPIO Manager2, Dennis L.

I spent several hrs yesterday trying to work through this and get the Manager2 to install so I could connect the MPIO player to my new PC - unfortunately without any progress!

Not sure if it helps at all but I found an interesting site (http://consumer.installshield.com/faq.asp --see Tips and Pointers at the bottom) that provides some ideas on dealing with the installation error I have.

I though I had a potential solution from this site when it said to delete all the files in the Temp folder (hmmm - maybe an old install file was still there and that's why I was getting the 'cannot delete a file when the file alreadt exists' error) - but even deleting all the Temp files/folders didn't help.

Then I tried updating the Install engine which is '8' - so I deleted the 'engine' folder, downloaded the new ISscrip8.zip file and ran it...

Guess what happened? - when I ran IsSript8.msi file it errorred out with exactly the same error msg as I got from Manager2. (BTW, even though I got this error it looks like the msi file actually did install the Installer 8 engine - at least there's a folder and a bunch of files in the new 'engine' folder that "look" like they s/b there.

Not sure where this leaves me, but it seems the problem maybe really isn't the Manager2 s/w but a bad installer engine, something's corrpt or an incompatability with the installer with my PC or OS...?

Also - I tried the other ideas in the consumer.installshield web site - and also tried loading Managre2 in safe mode - all without luck.

I have emailed MPIO but haven't heard anything yet.

In meantime - any other brilliant ideas?

    Thanks and regards.

Their were two forum sites for MPIO users, but they are gone and or broke.
    Did find this ...
A place to exchange information on MPIO / Digitalway flash-based MP3 players with emphasis on the F series and other new models., at Yahoo Groups
Search the post see if you can find a solution. Looks like a good group to subscribe to. Please get back with updates.
    Thanks
    Dennis

I posted a msg on my problem in Yahoo's MPIO forum - so we'll see if anything comes back. I searched through the postings but didn't see any references to my Manager2 installation problem.

    Did a bit more thinking - and would apprciate your feedback;

    Tonight I'll try:

-- running my new PC in Win 98 compatabilty mode for the installation of Manager2

-- search my registry for any legacy Manager2 remenents that may be interfering with a clean install (Do you think some rogue registry entry may be why I'm geting this "Cannot create a file when that file aready exists" error msg?

-- I'm really puzzled why I get the same error when I try to install the Installshield engine 8 - so I'll copy known good files from another PC for this folder (it's only a few hundred K in size); then register the dll's and try the Manager2 install again - it's along shot but may be wortyh a try.

Hope I hear something from MPIO but I'm getting to the point where I'll either have to use my old Win98 PC (what a pain) 'only' for transfering mp3s to my MPIO player or replace the FL100 for a newer (full USB compatability) player (proably not an MPIO).
