    "With MozPreferencer you can add user_prefs to your user.js file by selecting a user_pref and select "Get Marked Preference" from the Tools Menu.
    Download (Rightclick, save target as, then open in Mozilla/Netscape to install). "

    http://www.hmetzger.de/etips6.html#9

    First question: Does this work in Netscape 7.0 Sure would be nice to have a quick way to get to user_pref.

    I have downloaded the file and it saves to hard drive as
    mozpreferencer.xpi.zip. When I open the file from within Netscape 7.0 it unzips and leaves me with the following two files:
    install.js and mozpreferencer.jar.

    What do I do then - -how do I install - -???? (I do have software installation turned on for this -but am at a loss)

    It should not have the .zip on the end if it.

    Right click on the file and rename it to mozpreferencer.xpi

    Start Netscape and go to File--Open File and browse to mozpreferencer.xpi and open it. It should ask if you want to allow it to install the program. Click yes.

    You are right about removing the zip and it will install. I rebooted and checked the Tools menu and there she is:
    Get Marked Preference Alt P

    BUT - -clicking on that doesn't do a thing. Nothing comes up at all. Is there a further step? Does it work on your systems?

    Is there an uninstall if it doesn't work in 7.0??

    Opps, sorry about the link - -thanks for the correction.
    ---------------
    From the same site, I tried to write the userContent.css to give color to the quoted reply - -

    span[_moz_quote=true] {
    color: green !important;
    }

    and that doesn't show the color on my system. Anyone having any luck with css???

    I've had luck with the userContent.css and userChrome.css files.

    http://www.hmetzger.de/etips6.html#17

    I believe that Netscape 7.0 is based on Mozilla 1.01, so the above feature would not work in N7 yet.

    However, it works fine here in Moz 1.1 if you choose decent colors.

    Tranquilo glad css works for you. I would not have tried it except that there was this note: "Addendum: Adding this to your userContent.css also adds "real-time-coloring" to Netscape 7.0/Mozilla 1.0! "

    Did I have to put in the hex number vs the color name to make it work in 7.0??

    --------

    WHen I chose a bar color for quoting replies, I uses the hex number but that was in user.js.

    -----

    Any ideas on how to make that entry on Tool bar work. Would love a shortcut to the user.js file. If it is not possible in 7.0 - how do I uninstall it???

    Yes, I see that it is supposed to offer "real time coloring" but I am not clear on what that is. Additionally, I am using Mozilla 1.1 rather than 1.0 so I cannot test... Paging Ramona

    Thanks Ramona - -so I am stuck with it for now. Fair warning to all others who try it.

    Do you know if anyone with 7.0 got it to work? Love the concept. Guess the note about it working in 7.0 ought to be
    removed - -http://www.hmetzger.de/etips6.html

    css ideas from same URL - -did you try any and did they work for you?

    To enable the Imageblocker in Netscape 7 - restore Mozilla functionality - -thought I would be able to right click on an image and add it to a list to be blocked by adding the following to user.js:

    user_pref( "imageblocker.enabled ", true);

    I have not found that to work either. Maybe that adblocker.xpi file stopped it.

    Hi Donna,

    I don't mess with css, and anything I have tried was a gift from tranquilo the css Guru. ;)

    adblock.xpi shouldn't have had any effect on your image blocker. Click on Tools | Image Manager | Block Images from this site, when you're on the page you want to block. Also the right click on the page, and selecting "Block Images from this Server ", should also work. Both work for me. The website will then be listed in the Image Manager sheet.

    I have 100% confidence in any file on Holger's site. From looking at the information there, I think there must be a missing step, i.e., there should be a path somewhere to the user_pref file. I'll try and get more info.

    That is too funny - -now it exactly where it is supposed to be under Tools as well as a right click.
    Maybe I was using ie and got confused!!!!! ;-)

    Bet you are right about needing another entry somewhere for the shortcut to user.js. Looking forward to your search results.

    Hubby is going to just install the browser tonight on his laptop. At what point does he delete the activation.dll? I didn't know any better and signed in - -altho do not use web mail, aim, IM.

    Love that clicking the throbber takes me to Google -favorite search engine!! However, when I click on Search next to Go button on toolbar I get the Netscape network. I did set my preferences for Google. Any ideas???

    One last note: Have Office 2000 installed any my spell checker no longer works since installing 7.0- -any ideas on that. donna

    The way that button works, is if you type in a term into the address bar and then click the search button, it will do a search on google, if you just click it, it takes you to the Netscape Search Page. I have not figured out how to fix that just yet, but I am looking for it.

    I have not heard of the spellchecker problem with Netscape disabling the one in Office.

    I would run a repair on Office to see if that will do the trick and repair the Office Spellchecker. (Just put in the Office Disk and it will startup for you)

    I just canceled out when it asked me to activate and it did not pop backup.

    donnacat,

    The activation.dll can be deleted or renamed right after install and before the first time you start netscape. I don't recall where it's located, but start/find should locate it.

    Just finished a Google search on the spell checker and Outlook 2000. Tried a couple of things to no avail.

    Suggestion to repair office is probably the best idea. Pulled out the Office disk to start it --Only If I turn off spell checker can I get the mail sent out - It is my back up in case something happens to 7.0.

    ----------

    Since I did the activation on my install of 7.0- - does it matter if I just leave it on the system - -or is recommendation to go ahead and delete.

    Thank you for the clarification of Search. Brooks is right - -when I type in search words I get the Google results.

    This has been quite an experience. Thank you to all who have helped. donna

    Win98Se - AMD 500/512 mem - NS7 (Compact) from Holger's site.

    New to this forum, so perhaps this has already been posted:

    Re: MOZPREFENCER.

    Doenloaded and installed as instructed.

    When "pref" highlited, it prompts for verification , select YES. It appears that nothing happens, but the selected preference seems to be added to the "pref.js" file not the "user.js" file (in memory) and does not take effect until you close NS and reboot. It does not take you to the .js file.

    This is just my observation, I could be wrong.

    Welcome to the Netscape Forum, Cap'nJim

    Hi Captjim,

    Glad to have you aboard, and thanks for reminding me to do some research on the mozpreferencer.xpi.

    I too am giving the Netscape Compact versions a trial run, and find it to my liking. It appears that the mozpreferencer was not a tweak that was added.

    I had the same experience as you, when trying the mozpreferencer.xpi. It was in the tools dropdown menu, but I think there is a step missing somewhere, that I certainly didn't catch.

    I will try and find out from Holger exactly what should be done when adding this feature.

    Romana,

    I am not familiar with this forum policies but I had some dificulty with the MOZprefencer D/L inJuly and exchanged emails with Holger.

    I would be glad to fwd it to you if you could provide a method to do so. ( I dont know if the private msg would allow this.

    Let me know.

    As I said, it seems to add the pref to the " pref.js" file not the user.js file. I don't know if this is a bug, or I am missing a step someplace as you suggest.

    regards; captjim

    captjlddavis,

    Mozilla/Netscape will never write to the user.js file, only the prefs.js file. Options added to the user.js file will overwrite those in the prefs.js file. However, if you delete an option from the user.js file you must delete it from the prefs.js file. The user.js file can be edited while Mozilla/Netscape is open, as changes take effect on the next restart. The prefs.js file can only be edited while the browser is closed.

    tranquilo,

    Thanks for your reply, as to editing pref.js & user.js. I concur.

    With regards to MOZPREFERENCER,(from Holger) he indicates that the selected pref will be added to your "user.js ", I think that it is added to your "pref.js" file while it is in memory and then saved to the "pref.js" file when you close NS.

    I did the following. (with NS 7..0 running)

    1. File search for *.js file containing
    "user_pref( "browser.downloadmanager.behavior "
    (none found)

    2. Went to Holger's site and selected:
    "user_pref( "browser.downloadmanager.behavior ", x);

    3. Selected Tools->Get Marked Preference,Accepted selection

    4. Closed NS

    5. Opened "pref.js" and searched for "user_pref( "browser.downloadmanager.behavior"

    6. Found: "user_pref( "browser.downloadmanager.behavior ", 0);
    wasn't there before.

    Conclusion (I may be wrong) is that MOZPREFERENCER added to "pref" while it was in memory (or compared it to file on disk ) then wrote the new pref.js to disk.

    If my logic is haywire please let me know.

    regards, captjim
