    I just noticed this new release over at Tucows but do not see any info about it on Mozilla's website. Anyone know what's up with this version? Also, how often does Mozilla put out newer versions of the program? it does seem like they do this quite often.

    Thanks all....

    Hi Kenny,

    That is an alpha Release, which means it is the first of the several Releases before the Final Release of Mozilla 1.8. There will be 1.8alph, 1.8beta, 1.8 RC 1, and then the final Release. Use this link to download, and get the Release Notes for Mozilla 1.8a:
    http://www.mozilla.org/releases/

    For up-to-date information on Mozilla:

    Look here for information on the Mozilla Roadmap, some of which is new:
    Milestone Schedule Changes

    Right now Mozilla 1.7 is at the 1.7 RC 2 stage, and I have read there will be an RC 3 before the Final Release. This Release code (1.7) will be used in the new Netscape, which AOL plans to release late June.

    My understanding, from the new Milestones schedule, that we got 1.8a1, with 1.8a2 coming up. Basically, more time will be spent on the alpha stage, which is great.
    It reminds me of these old definitions.
    alpha=does not work
    beta=still does not work.

    Wow, this 1.8 version sure does crash alot on me! I'm actually considering going back to the last stable final version of the browser. I'm a bit perplexed at this as 1.7 ran just fine with no crashes to speak of. You would think 1.8 would be just as stable as they use basically the same "guts" in this version as 1.7, right?

    Anyone here have an opinion on Firefox and the stand alone mail client? Is it stable and fast?

    Crashes drive me nuts. It always seems to happen at the worst possible time. :eek:

    Hi Kenny,

    That is an alpha version, and yes, you will have crashes, as it is not yet stable. You would do better to wait for the RC 1 or RC 2 releases of 1.8. The alpha stage is definitely still a work in progress, so my advice would be to go back to 1.7.
