    I did a dum-dum act. D/L new anti-virus program, Avast!. Looked good. Installed it only to have my email setups goofed. Apparently Avast! changed the whole thing to proxy setting address of 127.0.0.0. Got the incoming working ok -- have to enter the pop3 pass word every time tho. Can't get SMTP to cooperate at all. Went thru the help file, haven't found anything that refers to this kind of problem -- so far.

    Uninstalled Avast! and run registry cleaner.

    Tried reinstall Moz. 1.5 on top of the old one, but that didn't work.

    Everything else appears ok.

    Any ideas out there? Can I use part of my backup profile and fix this SMTP proglem?

    Hi Bob,

    I checked the FAQ for the Avast program, and found this:

    Q. avast! 4 changes my POP3 and SMPT settings to 127.0.0.1 and also the names of my e-mail accounts are modified, so I cannot send any messages. What is wrong?

    A. Avast! needs to change those settings, otherwise it couldn´t scan your e-mail messages. But it shoudln´t cause any problems with sending or receiving messages. If you have problems, however, follow these steps:

    1. In Outlook Express, set your servers for incoming and outgoing messages to default. Set your username and password to the correct values as well.
    2. Try to send and receive your e-mail. All should work now, but without the protection of avast!
    3. Now, close Outlook Express (very important!!!).
    4. Start the Mail Protection Wizard (START -> PROGRAMS -> AVAST! ANTIVIRUS -> MAIL PROTECTION WIZARD).
    5. Follow the instructions.
    6. At the end, you can launch Outlook Express again.

    I noted that all FAQ's referred to IE, but saw nothing referring to Netscape or Mozilla. I will look more thoroughly later.

    The 127.0.0.1 shouldn't be a problem, if the instructions that the above FAQ refers to is concise. You may have to email them to get specific settings for Netscape. My older Norton AV used the 127.0.0.1, but I had to do some tweaking to get it to work. My ISP was my resource for the tweaks.

    If you've uninstalled Avast, and have a "good" backup of your Profile, then you're in good shape.

    Did you back up the entire "Profiles" folder? Let me know exactly what you have backed up, and we'll go from there.

    Maybe this will work:

    go to edit/mail & newsgroup account settings
    select Outgoing Server (smtp)
    click advanced button.

    You should see your smtp servers listed there. If you have more than one, make the correct server the default, and press ok (or delete the one you no longer need).
    If you only have one listed, just create a new smtp server entry with the correct information, make it the default, and ignore or delete the entry you no longer need. The reason for all this is that mozilla will not allow you to delete the default entry...

    If for some reason the above fails, simply edit the prefs.js file.

    close mozilla
    back up prefs.js file
    open prefs.js in your favorite text editor
    search for:

    user_pref( "mail.smtp.defaultserver ", "smtp1 ");
    user_pref( "mail.smtpserver.smtp1.auth_method ", 1);
    user_pref( "mail.smtpserver.smtp1.hostname ", "your.smtp.server ");
    user_pref( "mail.smtpserver.smtp.port ", 25);
    user_pref( "mail.smtpserver.smtp1.try_ssl ", 0);
    user_pref( "mail.smtpserver.smtp1.username ", "your username if needed ");
    user_pref( "mail.smtpservers ", "smtp1 ");

    your information and smtp server entry number may be different (smtp2, smtp3, etc.)

    For your password problems, have you checked to make sure that passwords are set to be rememberd?

    edit/prefs/security and privacy/passwords -- remember passwords should be checked.

    Also check:

    tools/manage stored passwords. if you see one for your pop3 server, delete it and mozilla should ask for the password the next time you check your mail. There should also be a box to check if you want mozilla to use the password manager to remember your password...

    You should see a list if you have a few saved passwords.

    As a last resort... you can rename your password file, but this should not be necessary.
    [somenumber].s in your mozilla profile directory...

    Gottit!!!

    Ramona, Tranquilo,

    Many thanks for the fast response. What in the world would we dunces do without you two to bail us out?!

    Don't use IE - no way, no how, much less, Outlook. Use M$ Xp stuff only when I have to. I deal with quite a few others who cannot get past M$ "junque" so can't totally eliminate it!

    Thank the gods, I retained my NS 4.79. I was able to use it for outgoing mail 'til just a few minutes ago.

    Did most of the steps Tranquilo offered before. Was puzzeled with fact my smtp setting reflected a blank port number -- apparently not needed. But real culprit was that there were a half-dozen or so duplicate SMTP addees and one was 127.0.0.1 (proxy). Deleting that corrected the problem, even though it was not selected. Boy Avant! really did a number on me! That'll teach me to play around when everything is working fine.

    So far, it all seems to be working properly.

    Wife and I were in the middle of many Holiday emails, two newsletters ,we put together each month, and incoming mail that would choke a horse. Told her, keep the faith, the guys on Wiin BBS will come through. And you did!!!

    Again, many thanks and the best of all for the Holidays to you two and to the lurkers that may be lurkin' by as well.

    Bob:)

    Therec are some Anti Virus programs, the most notable being Norton, which will change the SMTP settings, if you selected to scan mail. Avast is, obviously another one. Although some people are taken aback by the fact that McAfee does not scan POP3 mail, it is for your own good.
    But, I would expect if you had done the "if all fails read the instructions ", you would have noticed that changes were made. For each account, click on the account name, and then the ever present "Advanced" button, you should see which smtp is used.
    I am fanatical about keeping the virus definitions up to date, but I refuse to put myself in the hands(?) of a program which is alien to me.

    Point well taken

    Westside,

    You can say that again. I do know better or rather, I though I did, but then I did it anyway. No excuses. I'm my own victim in this case.

    Hey Bob,

    We've all been there and done that, but you know what? Nothing ventured, nothing gained.... Living on the cutting edge is experience gained, maybe not always a good experience, but nonetheless, experience! Mistakes are definitely allowed, and isn't that what makes us human?
