    Downloaded Mozilla 1.4, uninstalled Mozilla 1.3, 1.4 installation stops with message: "invalid page fault at module XPcom.dll ". It put new icon on desktop but gives the same message when I try to bring up 1.4. Any suggestions??

    Thanks,

    Marvin:confused:

    Checked release notes and saw reference to xpcom.dll and followed instructions and 1.4 is now installed. I will put in the plugins that I saved from 1.3 and see what happens.

    For the record (and in case it helps anyone else) is this the reference you saw?
    From http://www.mozilla.org/releases/mozilla1.4/README.html
    under New Issues (the very end of the page):
    ====================copy/paste================
    If you are experiencing crashes on startup in xpcom.dll it is very likely that there is an incompatibility with some third-party extension. To work around this problem, uninstall your previous version of Mozilla, and completely delete the Mozilla install directory before performing the new install. * You will not lose your profile data (such as bookmarks, preferences and cookies) but any third party extensions and plugins may be lost.

    ================end c/p======================

    Thanks for posting back ;)

    Alice, Thanks for the reply. Yes, it is exactly what you are referring to. I deleted everything in my mozilla directory after saving my plugins to another folder and reinstalled Mozilla 1.4. This time it installed ok. I then moved the plugins back to the Mozilla plugin folder. At first I could not receive mail(could sent, just not receive) but after rebooting all now appears to be working just fine.

    Hi Marvin,

    Thanks for the details.

    I've seen similar advice for installing Netscape 7.1 (which is based on Mozilla 1.4).

    It seems that uninstalling can leave behind some files inside C:\Program Files\...\Mozilla (or C:\Program Files\...\Netscape) so you need to remove the leftovers before the new install. Like you say, the C:\Program Files\...\Mozilla\Plugins folder or C:\Program Files\...\Netscape\Plugins) folder can be temporarily moved to a backup location, then replaced after the installation is complete.

    I'm happy to hear that all is working now.

    :) Alice :)
