Does anyone know if Mozilla 1.4 or Netscape 7.1 supports Active X? I thought I remember reading in a forum, perhaps on SillyDog's or Club Netscape's site, that it does to a limited degree. Does anyone know about this, or if it does? thanks.

    Hi Kevin,

Netscape 7.1 shipped with an ActiveX plugin. Not the ActiveX controls used by programs (*.ocx).

    Mozilla.org - Plugindoc:
The Mozilla ActiveX Plugin was written by Adam Lock of Netscape to add ActiveX support to Mozilla. Development is not yet complete. This plugin is included with Netscape 7.1, and is configured to only work with the Windows Media Player control. An XPI package is available for Mozilla 1.4.

IMPORTANT! This plugin can be configured to download and install ActiveX controls, which can be a security risk. This is configured using activex.js.

    Adam Lock:
    Plug-in For Hosting ActiveX Controls

Netscape 7.1 ships with the ActiveX plugin by default. It is restricted to only hosting the the Windows Media Player control. You can play with the settings in its defaults/pref/activex.js file to enable support for other controls.

The Mozilla version of activex.js contains documentation telling you how to do this.
    Mozilla 1.4 & Firebird 0.6

Here is a version of the plugin for Mozilla 1.4 and Firebird 0.6 on Win32 only. Don't bother installing it on other versions or platforms because it won't work and the installer won't save you from yourself!

Do not install the plugin on Netscape 7.1 since it is already there!

Click HERE to install for Mozilla 1.4

Once installed, restart your browser and you should now be able to insert OBJECT tags into pages, download and install controls and do most of the other things you would expect.

Probably more than you wanted to know, but there is a wealth of information on Adam's page.

It is possible to disable the activex plugin in Netscape 7.1 by renaming these files:

    activex.js
    npmozax.dll
