    Major Roadmap Update Centers Around Phoenix, Thunderbird;
    1.4 Branch to Replace 1.0; Changes Planned for Module Ownership Model

    In the most radical change to the Mozilla project since the late 1998 decision to rewrite much of the code, mozilla.org today announced a major new roadmap proposal that will see Phoenix and Thunderbird (also known as Minotaur) becoming the focus of future development. According to the roadmap, 1.4 is likely to be the last milestone of the traditional Mozilla suite and the 1.4 branch will replace the 1.0 branch as the stable development path. mozilla.org is also proposing changes to the module ownership model including a move towards stronger leadership and the removal of mandatory super-review in some cases. Please read the Full Article for the full analysis.

    If they succeed with Minotaur in reducing the bloat and speeding up the program as they have with Phoenix then it will be great.

    I have switched over to Phoenix (even with its few bugs) since it runs faster than Mozilla, IE, Netscape and Opera 7 (Opera 6 may have an edge).

    I have just today downloaded and installed the .01 version of Minotaur and so far have not had any major problems. The skins are not working correctly yet, but I have done a workaround using the Orbit 3+1 skin.

    Minotaur is not a lot faster as yet than Mozilla Mail, but they have not really started rewriting the code yet. Just some minor breaking it away from Mozilla at this point.

    Keep in mind at this point, both Phoenix and Minotaur are still very much beta software, in fact Minotaur is more like an alpha build. Considering this, they are still both amazing in what they can do at this stage.

    Brooks,

    Thanks so much for the information, and review of Minotaur!

    This is going to be a very interesting phase for Mozilla, and whatever comes after. What this will mean for Netscape still remains to be seen, and whatever it will be, is a closely guarded secret. Lots of rumors though...

    I just got Minotaur. I got it from Phoenix, and it was interesting that it gave a double extention, .zip.sit. For those who don't know .sit is the Mac equivalent of .zip. I have Stuffit for Windows, so I could handle both, but I decided to remove the .sit part.
    The most impressive thing was the incredible size, over 10 MB download, and 23.1 MB unzipped. It works with a certain profile . I messed around with two of them, and it was doing ok.
    I noticed only one small problem , in having no way to add more than line per filter. I has a Spam button, but nothing happens unless I move the e-mail to a folder. Ragardless of its size, it seem fast enough.

    Follow up to Minotaur

    A new thread will have to be started about this subject. Just two comments.
    1.If you want to make it a real standalone, it should have its own profile. I am using it with the profile of a standalone Netscape. As a plus, it has the 1.3 and 1.4a Junk controls, but being used to Netscape mail, it does not get either AOL or Netscape Webmail. The way I have it, it is no better than a regular program with -mail added.
    2. The filter box should be raised, and the bottom will down. That will give a lot more space. There was no scrollbar, but did not try to add another filter.
