Will soon be receiving a brand new Dell with XP and I would like to know if there is an easy way to transfer some of my files & programs from my current Win 98 machine. TIA for any help or suggestions.

With XP there is a utility program called, "File and Setting Transfer Wiz ". One method is to directly connect with a null modem (cable) to each port on the computers. Another and faster method is over the internet with a network configuration.

Details regarding the transfer wizzard are available on your system in the help section.

I have just done the same thing moving files from a Windows 95 machine to a Windows XP machine.

    1) Download WinZip from http:\\www.winzip.com onto both machines. The evaluation version is free.

    2) Zip up your work onto floppy disks.

    3) Unzip your work from the floppy disks on to your new machine.

    4) Job done.

WinZip allows you to make a huge .zip file across multiple floppy disks and also will save and recreate your directory structure as well as whatever you want within it.

My experience was straight forward and trouble free.

Ken's answer is what you need it will actually reinstall the programs so they work as on 98! This will get all the registry settings and program files etc!

You can copy data but not programs and expect them to work! In fact if you restore a ziped recursed tree to you OS drive then it could possibly bomb out XP!

Zipping is good for data and documents!

I am a new purchaser of a Windows XP system. Using an Iomega Zip drive I transferred all my files from my Windows 98 computer to my windows XP computer. Tthat was on November 7 and on November 17 the Windows XP crashed. It took 60 plus hours to get the Windows XP operating again.
I have talked to so-called experts at Iomega and Dell and neither can give me a definitive answer as to what I can do to transfer data from machineA to machineB.

    File and Settings Transfer Wizard

    Sorry about your troubles!

The transfer wizard as reccomended to Loreen requires the the 2 computers to be connected and working!

What you did by using a removable could not reinstall the software and settings, and if you restored say a backup of another OS onto the XP OS, anything could happen right up to killing XP immediately! If it don't destroy it then everything from those apps not working to a gamut of other problems would ocurr!

Sounds like what happend to you!

You could have gotten documents favorites emails etc but no programs, they should have been reinstalled on XP!

There are at least 2 programs that would have helped you!
Aloha Bob transfer wizard and Mover98 for win98! These would put the programs on a zipdisk that would restore properly to any other windows OS!

So you are back up, and did you get every thing back?

    Hope so!

Is there anything I can help you with?

    Loreen,

Ken and mflynne are quite correct.

I did not move programs, only word processer and database data files.

The programs which created them are no longer in production and will not run on XP. The data have been converted into .txt or .tsv format so as to remain accessable using other programs.

Hi Guys, happy to announce that I have set up networking on a router for three machines and all is well --- sort of. I have been able to transfer everything that I wanted to transfer so I'm not gonna worry about zips etc. Very much appreciate all you suggestions and help. After using 98 for so long I'm fumbling along with XP right now and with every new program it will take time to get comfortable with it.

    Lorreen

PS Really need to get the pro version of XP
