My boss at work has an NT4 server running as a domain controller. He wants to be able to move the domain controller to a 2000 Server and demote the NT4 domain controller to a stand-alone server. Is it possible for him to do this without investing in third-party software such as UPromote?

Without the aid of 3rd-party utilities, you cannot demote domain controllers in NT.
