I have recently installed win 98SE. After the install I installed realplayer and winmedia player. Both tend to hang badly. When I try to use ctrl-alt-del they do not close. Other applications seem to run all right but the ctrl-alt-del function is also hung up. To get rid of the now dead viewer screen I have to reboot. Another running application will overlay the dead white screen but when the other application is closed the dead white viewerscreen is still there. Any suggestions welcomed.

Use a proram called Process Explorer.

It shows more processes than alt-crtl-del and REALLY kills them.

And if a program will not close, it will not hide the fact and de-list it anyway (yes, that happens!).

Moreover, if a hang is due to an endless loop, it will show that CPU usage shoots up. The offending program is then a candidate for reinstall or other attentions.

Also, check if you have obnoxious interfering critters. Candidates may be

    - stupid player "aids" or "control centers" that start by themselves and run in background (all 100% useless, emasculate them all using selective startup by doing run->msconfig->enter)

    - stupid media helper sw by the maker of your audio or video card

    - stupid children processes of some P2P+multimedia program.

    Please post your adventures!

You need to go through RealPlayers Options and see how many services you subscribed to during the install. Two were hidden by the overlooked scroll bar.
It might help if you posted which versions you installed.
