I'm having the same problem as Chris Woodward when he posted "Mouse issue ". My laptop is a Sony Vaio and was purchased in January 08. I too have experienced the frustrating, intermittent problem of IE moving back a page as if I had clicked on the "back page" button. In my case, it happens while I'm moving the mouse and sometimes may make a small pause. Sometimes I will even see a "flash" of 2 buttons near my mouse pointer which say "Prev|Forward" and then they quickly disappear. What's up with that? This behavior has occurred ever since I have owned the laptop. I called Sony support and they just reloaded my mouse driver and said that was all they could do. I always use the touchpad mouse which was included with the laptop (so it's not an "old" mouse). I've tried adjusting the sensitivity of the touchpad with no results. I suspect this is a Vista issue. Does anyone have any advice on getting this solved?

Hi and welcome to the BBS,

You are not actually talking about a mouse, you are using the touchpad which is a different "device ", but does the same function, they are both "pointing devices" though. I suggest you read the User Guide for instructions how to use the touchpad, something you may not know is that the right side of the pad is used for scrolling. For example, if you are say, viewing webpages of photos (or photos as webpages) touching the scroll-bar might be why you see Prev|Forward.

The touchpad will have software as well as drivers. The main manufacturer of touchpad devices/drivers/software is Synaptics. Look up the downloads for your model at Sony. There will probably be a download for the touchpad, try installing that. Look in Start -> All Programs and see if a "touchpad" program is listed there, read in the Help section.

In Device Manager the touchpad should be listed under "Human Interface Devices" and also "Mice and other Pointing Devices ". The touchpad should be listed separately from a mouse (although I don't have a laptop handy to check).

If you want to try uninstalling the software for the touchpad, look in Control Panel -> Programs and Features. Have the laptop's drivers CD or the download from Sony ready for when you reboot.

mattman wrote "something you may not know is that the right side of the pad is used for scrolling. " Well, no I never noticed that. That was a good clue. When I passed my finger from horizontally at the top edge of the touch pad, then out popped the "prev|back" button! I thought, maybe I can turn this "feature" off. I headed for the control center and found "mouse properties ". Sure enough, there was "web assistant" at the top edge of the touchpad. I turned it off and it no longer pops up! No more mysterious jumps of IE. Thanks mattman!
