".mov" file converter

Does anyone know of any programs that can convert .mov files to a more usable format (something that runs on media player). I have tried a few programs from CNET's download.com but they either don't work or they contain loads of bugs. The files are from a digital camera and i know that they will run on quicktime; but i prefer something a little more aesthetically pleasing and a type of file that i can easily trade with friends.
