When I move the mouse, it moves across the screen far to fast. Normally, I'd go to Control Panel > Printers and Other Hardware > Mouse, select Pointer Options Tab, and slide the Mouse Speed button, but this isn't highlighted so I can't move it, any suggestions?

First thought in situations like this - uninstall/reinstall drivers and check for updates.

Unfortunately PeteC, I have borrowed the mouse from my friend, and it's USB. There isn't an installation disc with it, and and don't know the company to check for updates.

Download and run Everest Home Edition - look under Devices > Input for possible identification of the mouse.

    Nice program. It says

    'Field Value
    Mouse Name HID-compliant mouse'?

Hm - not very helpful - must be a generic mouse of unknown parentage :)

FYI - HID > Human Interface Device

OK - a couple of approaches - If there is a bar code with a number printed below it - or any other apparently identifying number Google for it.

As a last resort you could download the MS USB mouse drivers from here ....

    http://www.microsoft.com/hardware/mouseandkeyboard/download.mspx

    and give it a try.

When I try to install the drivers, it says:

'Setup has detected an older version of this software installed on this computer. To uninstall previous version older version lick OK'

So I do, but then it says it can't uninstall, so I try and uninstall at Add and Remove Programs but when I click 'Remove', it just blinks and nothing happens?

Maybe because you do not have an MS mouse identified by the system. As the older version is not working with this mouse I very much doubt that the newer version will work.

I think you are stuck with the mouse as it is unless some one else has some ideas. That mouse may not support changes to the pointer speed.

Look in Device Manager and remove all instances of mice under HID and Mice and reboot to let Windows find the mouse again.

Oh well, looks like I'll just have to put up with it I suppose, thanks anyway.

This mouse has no name or information either on the top or bottom of the mouse?

Some mice need the software as well as the driver. Within the software there are options that let you determine whether the software controls the mouse settings or windows. If your mouse speed option is greyed out and unadjustable I suspect you have that sort of mouse. You need the software setup as well as the driver.

Second option is an adapter that will change the usb mouse into a serial mouse.

Have you checked the mouse property tabs in device manager? I just noticed that I have an advanced option tab on mine, with a few settings. Perhaps yours does also.

No, it doesn't have the Advance tab, never mind. I'll just have to put up with it for a while. Thanks anyway.
