    Two possibilities ....

The mouse has died or there is a problem with the PS/2 port.

Most USB mice come with a USB>PS/2 connector (MS do) - try plugging the USB mouse into PS/2 with the adaptor. If it still works the problem lies in the PS/2 mouse.

Look in Device Manager and see if a) a PS/2 mouse is recognised when plugged into the PS/2 port or b) there is a yellow exclamation mark against that entry.

If the PS/2 port is the problem I guess that is down to a mobo problem. You could try, in Device Manager, Scan for new hardware.

I have both a PS2 ( using the USB>PS/2 connector ) and a USB mouse plugged in at all times. XP Pro is the OS now but both have existed since the days of 98FE.

One is Logitech and the other is MS.

Every once in a while I have to shut the machine down and switch them around ( plugin point only ) because one or the other quits working properly. I have had to do this for years . Never did ( and probably never will ) find out why.
