I have Win2000 SP4 (just recently updated from SP2). My mouse is an Intellimouse Explorer 3.0A USB and PS2 compatible. The problem I'm having is, every once in a while there is an hourglass flashing next to the pointer that will not go away. Today, when I went into mouse properties and clicked on troubleshoot I got an error message something about no script and internet explorer. After that when I got on the internet, the flashing hourglass went away. Any suggestions? Do I need to update my driver? If so, where can I go to do that?

    Thanks

    Add on to mouse problem

Just some further info to the above problem. When I disconnected from the internet (IE), the flashing hourglass next to my pointer came back. I then went back on the web and the hourglass disappeared, so there seems to be some connection. Any ideas?

First option - Device Manager and uninstall/remove the mouse - or mice if more than one. Reboot and let Windows find it again.

Second Option - Control Panel > Mouse and change the pointer set > OK (for MS mice at least). Then change back to the set you were using.

Check here for an updated driver if it's a Microsoft mouse - if not go to the web site of the maker - use Google to find the site.

    Updating driver

How do I update the driver? Don't know what I am doing. I went to the website, went to download, went to where it said get the latest software for your mouse, etc. It asked what mouse I had, what OS. Downloaded and installed and restarted my computer. It did not go over my other driver. Sorry to be so stupid. I uninstalled, but it left a folder on my desktop called "microsoft mouse." Inside the folder is an application called "DPLaunch." Can I just delete this folder -- don't see this app in add/remove.

Did I do the update wrong?

Doesn't look like it :) When you got to the File Download dialogue box did you 'Open' the file or 'Save' the file. The latter option is best - not only do you have the software on your hard drive for future use, but it gives you a 'second chance' if things appear to go wrong and saves downloading again.

The fact that it did not go over the other driver suggests that you had the latest driver already installed.

For an Intellipoint Mouse the Readme text has this to say ....

" 1.7 After removing IntelliPoint software, the links to start IntelliPoint in the documentation open the Mouse Properties dialog box
During IntelliPoint software removal, there is an option to save the Microsoft pointing device documentation to the Windows desktop. This documentation contains links to start IntelliPoint, which provides enhanced features and additional tabs to the Mouse Properties dialog box. After IntelliPoint software is removed, the documentation links continue to open the Mouse Properties dialog box, without the IntelliPoint enhancements. "

I guess that's where the Desktop file came from when you uninstalled. Should be safe to delete.

If you still have the original problem the best solution, IMO is to download the mouse software to your hard drive, then to uninstall any mouse software listed in Add/Remove Programs and remove the mouse in Device Manager, reboot and install the software.
