    Hi,
My husband is running Windows 98. Some time ago he seemed to be having problems with his mouse so we replaced it with a new one. That didn't seem to work either so we bought another one and then tried several more.

I'm beginning to think it is not the mouse but something on the computer causing it to behave erratically. I have tried both USB and Serial mice but have the same problem.

Say he is working a jigsaw puzzle from: http://www.jigzone.com/. When he moves the puzzle pieces to the proper location his mouse arrow is about 1 inch ahead of the piece he is trying to drag. It is very hard to put the puzzle together when the arrow and the piece are in two different locations.

I'm at a loss as to how to make this mouse problem resolved. Any help will be appreciated.

    Thank you for the help.

I did run SpyBot software but the mouse still does not keep up the icon and the arrow together.

There are no delays when entering text or scrolling.

    Any other suggestions.

By the way I tried to put on a new mouse and added the new software but then since it didn't work I just added the old mouse again. Do I have to take off the Intelli software?

    Hello Jean

Try removing the drivers. Boot to Safe Mode, go to Add/Remove Programs and remove anything related to mouse(s). Go to Control Panel > System > Device Manager and remove any mices. Reboot.

To see if it is a Windows(/DOS) problem or the computer itself you could boot from a boot floppy that has mouse control. One I know of is Partition Magic, another way would be to start running the Windows 98 setup program until it loads the the mouse from the CD (then cancel when you know).

    Hi Matt,

I did remove the drivers as you suggest. I haven't tried to boot from a flopy because I don't have one and I don't want to buy Partition Magic just to test this out..

What I did is remove the drivers and then re-installed his Microsoft PS-2 Optical (USB) Mouse using the Intellipoint software that came with it. I looked in the device manager and I still got an exclmation point on the "Microsoft PS/2 Mouse, (Intellipoint).

Then I put in the regular old fashioned mouse with the ball into the mouse port and restarted the computer and then it loaded the "HID Compliant Mouse" in the Device Manager and the exclamation point on the USB mouse went away.

I have both of the mice hooked up right now but my husband said they still don't act right.

I just don't know what to do.

    Jean
