My wife's mouse quit working and some of the desktop shortcut icons disappeared. I had to use the power button to shut it down - Ctrl-Alt-Del didn't work. When I powered back up, no change in the situation. I opened the case, did some long overdue cleaning, and reseated the memory sticks. When I powered up again, same situation.

I powered up again in Safe Mode and ran a restoration to earlier today and all the desktop icons appeared and the mouse was functional but as soon as I clicked the mouse, it froze again and many of the desktop icons again disappeared. I tried a couple of more restoration points to no avail.

I suppose this could be malware or hardware related. A couple of days ago, we heard a fairly loud pop that came from the area of the computer, but the computer has been functioning normally up until this afternoon. Any thoughts? Should I be moving this to malware removal - or hadware perhaps? Her computer is Dell 4600 about 5 yrs old.

I tried two different USB mice with no luck. I'm fairly certain the problem is not the mouse because the computer locks up under normal boot up. When I go into safe mode, the mouse works fine.

    Added Info

Just tried powering the computer on again to see if there was any change. Sort of went through boot up and then got the following blue screen:

I restarted the computer with the same result - so I am contacting my Technical Support Group (Windows BBS) for further assistance. I did a Google search for "nv4_disp" and got this hit at the NVIDIA forum site http://forums.nvidia.com/index.php?showtopic=4432 My questions now are should I use the link and can I use it while booted in safe mode? Or - again, should I be in the hardware or malware removal forums?

The stop error gives you the likely cause ....
Your first step IMO is to update the video drivers - use method 2 here. If that fails to resolve the problem remove the graphics card - unless the graphics are onboard - and reseat. This will effectively clean the contacts.

    Pete,

The NVIDIA card shown in our Belarc display is NVIDIA GeForce FX 5200. The NVIDIA link you provided defaults to a 200 series. I assume that is the correct one. Can I install the downloaded driver while the computer is operating in "Safe" mode?

    Robert - I said Option 2 :)
Or use Option 1 ..... Select GeForce 5FX Series, then Search. The driver which is selected supports the FX 5200 - see the Products supported tab - scroll to the end of the list.
    I don't see why not.

    Success

    Pete C,

Success came when I followed your instructions - wife is happy again. Thus, I am happy. The reason I didn't use option 2 before is that I was using my computer and figured that it would be scanning my computer which wouldn't help me very much - it was the wife's computer that was cranky. So, Petec and foxhenry, thanks for your interest and help.
