Every once in a while, my mouse and keyboard freeze, forcing me to reboot via the power switch. Almost 70% of the time, I get a boot error.

SYSTEM BOOT ERROR INSERT SYSTEM DISK AND PRESS ENTER

When this happens any floppy disk/ CD/ DVD or USB thumbdrive (my PC can boot from USB) I insert is not reconized producing a:

INVALID SYSTEM DISK PRESS A KEY TO REBOOT

I press enter a few times and 1/3 of the time it lets me boot. When I get into windows, occasionally the computer spontaneously turns off without warning. I mean the screen reports no signal, the power LED flicks off and the cable modem gets no "PC Activity ".

Scandisk came up automatically once, recovering some data. I set chkdsk /f to run at restart, but it never did. In event viewer I saw this:

What's a parity error? What should I do?

It looks as though your hard drive is going bad.

Time to backup files I guess. But what would cause my PC to just shut off? Overheating?

    hard drive diagnostics...

    Dave,

It definitely sounds like the hard drive is failing... go to your hard drive manufacturer's website and download the diagnostic tools and run them. Depending on the age of your hard drive it may be under warranty.
And don't wait to backup any important data on that drive (the clock is ticking)
Overheating? Possibly if you don't have a program to check your temperatures, go to MajorGeeks and download Everest v2.20. Listed under Computer -> Sensor you will find your temp. readings.

    B

Dave, the screenshot that you attached signal a faulty disk drive controller. As everybody has suggested, backup your data ASAP and check your hard disk. Your motherboard may also have to be looked at - check for loose data and power cables. Try replacing the HDD data cable. Clean the innards of your computer of dust and grime while you are at it.

A parity error is a checksum error - it could be of RAM or hard disk data. In your case its of hard disk data.
