I hope that this is the right place to post this. I'm unsure as to the source of the problem but I wonder about the ps/2 drivers. I'd like some advice before I proceed.

I'm having this strange problem that started after a system melt down. Every other time, without fail, that I reboot my computer my mouse (ps/2) is not recognized. Once I reboot I can use the mouse again, until the next time that I use windows.

Has anyone experienced anything like this before? Would anyone be able to point me in the right direction?

If it's revevent - The melt down that I experienced prior to this problem went like this: I overheated the CPU, my mother board started beeping at very short intervals and would not stop I tried everything from wiping the disk and reinstalling, to swaping sound cards, graphics cards, and even the mother board. (when I had no graphics card in was the only time the beeping would not start on boot up) It went away on it's own after I switched back to the original mother board and never came back. However it was at this time that I started to loose mouse functionality on every other reboot.

Are you facing any other problem except mouse? Did you replace your CPU ?

No, I have not replaced the cpu. I just bought a GeForce 6600 to replace my 5200. CPU will come at a later date.

The issues that I'm looking at right now seem to have to do with the performance of my system. It sometimes becomes "glitchy" taking a long time to load (for instance) load game areas or switch between game and windows (this second problem seeming to have been mostly solved by the graphics card replacement). The mouse problem seems to be entirely indepenent.

It's a problem with the windows OS I think, because when I know I'm going to boot up and not be able to use the mouse I have tried to simply shut down the computer before windows starts to load and on the next start up the mouse is still unresponsive. So I reason that this has to be a problem within windows.

Any advice as to tests to help me isolate the problem? I think that I'd try to update the PS/2 drivers, do I need to find a specific driver or is it pretty generic across all boards?

I just tried to use a USB mouse during a boot up where my mouse wasn't working. What's happeninging is that Windows keeps recognizing, loosing, and recognizing the device over and over again. It will work for a minute then stop as windows finds it and installs drivers for it. It seems very strange. To be fair it is also a mouse from my Mac.

It's still bleeping at me, finding the device over and over again.

Boot into safe mode & remove mouse driver. Reboot & let Windows reinstall drivers.
