Mouse can't left click

I'm helping another friend with a pc that's having some issues. You all have been very helpful thus far, so I figured I'd buzz back again.

The mouse won't left click. Sometimes it right clicks, but sometimes it doesn't. I've googled mouse won't left click, but can't seem to find the exact symptoms. I'm thinking it's spyware, as it seems a bit sluggish.

I was able to install Hijack This through creative keystrokes. I'm not totally familiar enough with the what I'm looking at to know what to remove, so I know I'm already in dangerous territory. I did remove a few things.

Anyway, I'm limited with not having a mouse that wants to work, and trying to operate with pretty much a keyboard only. Any suggestions as to how to begin to troubleshoot this one would be really appreciated.

this may sound stupid but did you try another mouse? also if i were you i would replace the mouse with another type ie: if your mouse is PS2 I would try a USB one...this way you would check also the port.
