Hi Everyone! What a great site!

I am finding that my mouse and keyboard freeze at a particular point in the installation process of XP Pro (upgrading from XP Home). As a result and much to my annoyance, the process obviously can't be completed and the computer is seemingly stuck in limbo. I've tried restarting it numerous times but the mouse and keyboard freeze in the same position with 34 minutes to go. I'm quite frustrated as it's a new computer and I can't use it! I'd really appreciate any words of advice or assistance with this problem.

    Thank you! :)

    bella96 - Welcome to the Board :)

What sort of mouse/keyboard connection - PS/2, USB or Wireless?

Remind me exactly what stage the install has got to with 34 mins to go - what's on the screen?

Examine the Setup log files for anything that may indicate what may be causing the problem. To do this, press SHIFT+F10 to open a command prompt after the first restart, and after any subsequent restarts, if Setup stops responding. In the %windir% folder (typically, C:\Windows), look for the Pnplog.txt file. This log file is only created during setup if there is an issue that is detected with hardware. The log file should include the hardware that Setup will skip on the next restart.

You can also review the Setupapi.log file, the Setupact.log file, and the Setuperr.log file (in the %windir% folder) to try to determine which device Setup was trying to detect when it stopped responding. To locate the device that is the most likely cause of the issue, read the last 10 to 15 lines at the end of the files.

Note You may have to look for the last class installer to load in the Setupapi.log file. This may tell you the device class instead of the specific device.

If the Setup log files indicate that a hardware device or a driver may be causing the problem, verify that your hardware is supported by Windows XP. To do this, check the device manufacturer's Web site, or visit the following Microsoft Hardware Compatibility List Web site: http://www.microsoft.com/whdc/hcl/default.mspx

    PeteC,

I have a wireless Microsoft keyboard and mouse.

The screen gets stuck during the Installation phase where the Installing Devices are only 2/3 completed. The timer motion in the bottom right hand corner continues to move as do the background details of the program. The freezing occurs at the 34 minute mark when the "Please insert the Compact Disc labeled "ATI Technologies Inc. Installation DISK '(VIDEO)' into your CD-ROM drive (D) and then click OK. You can also click OK if you want files to be copied from an alternate location, such as a floppy disk." display comes on the screen.

While on the surface things appear to be working, the disk is sitting idle.

When I open the CD drive - the screen changes to "The file 'ati2mtag.sys' on ATI Technologies Inc. Installation Disk (VIDEO) is needed. Type the path where the file is located, and then click OK. Copy files from: ?????ware\drivers\video\8.172-intel\2kxp_inf\.\B_26509 ".

As the mouse/keyboard are rendered unusable, I can't select this file to continue.

It looks like I will have to sit down and explore the second suggestion made here...I just need to find the time and more importantly, courage!!!

I rather suspected a wireless keyboard "“ unfortunately they do not work at low level, such as in the BIOS and I suspect that is your problem too. If you have access to a plug in PS/2 type keyboard "“ assuming you have a PS/2 socket on the computer - I would try using that.

At the same time I am rather surprised that the install is asking for the ATI driver. One way round this, although you indicated that you could not use the computer in which case this is irrelevant, would be to uninstall the ATI drivers before attempting the upgrade and let Windows use the default VGA drivers. Not sure if that would work though.

I've given the Shift F10 option a go - with no luck. It comes up with three options: To continue current upgrade (tried that - it didn't work), To cancel current upgrade and install new Windows version, To exit setup without installing by pressing F3 - which didn't work either - it just went back to the installation screen.

I have no idea what to do now as I cannot access the Start screen to try anything else. Does anyone have any suggestions what I do now?

If you have a Home CD try a Repair install to get you back to square one.

:D I am very, very glad to say that I have found a solution.

I replaced my mouse and keyboard with the plug-in type and within the blink of an eye - the computer started to work. It also said something about 'Sticky keys' so I just chose to cancel that option and see what would happen. Following that (and perhaps coincidentally), XP Pro went ahead and fully installed!

Thank you so much for the advice - it's greatly appreciated.

So glad to hear that you have resolved the problem :)

Wireless keyboards and mice have their merits, but do not work before Windows has started to load - the earliest point I am aware of is the login screen.

As I posted they do not work at BIOS level and for that reason I also have a PS/2 keyboard and USB mouse permanently plugged into my system. Rather defeats the object of the wireless system, bit I find it the wireless keyboard convenient as I have a second computer plugged into the same monitor (it has dual inputs) and am able to easily aside the wireless keyboard and mouse to make way for the wired keyboard/mouse on the other computer.

On previous motherboards I have found it necessary to have a serial mouse plugged in to supplement the USB mouse which would not work before Windows loaded. Fortunately progress has resolved that problem.
