Who is right in this situation, Gigabyte or Intel?

In Processors - FAQ Intel states:

In GA-EP45T-UD3LR you find the Memory Support List which indicates that the downgrade is to 1333 MHz (from 1600 MHz and above).

I'm inclined to trust Intel but ... ... who's right?

    Edited:
The above is about the corresponding Core 2 900-series ... ... not the Core i7 900-series.

GA-X58A-UD7 and its Memory Support List are what should have been referred to. No downgrades (frequency) mentioned but limitations on the number of modules.

Anyway, my mistake helped me (in post #3) making my point of matching memory frequency and FSB.

    Also on the Gigabyte table:
I say Intel is right ;)

I interpret "we can only verify some of them" as even if it's not in the table, it may work or even probably will work (if you don't buy the cheapest one).

The table Intel® Core™2 Quad Desktop Processor Family indicates that these processors have different FSB frequencies, 1066 MHz and 1333 MHz. If you click any model for detailed information, it doesn't say anything about memory support. (I have always thought that matching the memory frequency with the FSB is the way to go unless your favourite pastime is over clocking.)

It seems to me that the "Processors - FAQ" is wrong or not updated but that doesn't make Gigabyte right because it depends on the choice of processor.

The table Intel® Core™ i7 Processor doesn't indicte a FSB frequency but a "Bus speed ". If you click any model for detailed information, it specifies which memory is supported.

If you compare GA-P55A-UD4 and the corresponding Memory Support List, it doesn't specify any limitations or downgrades but "any frequency goes ".

    I stated my opinion above:

For the new processors, I have to amend that to:

Unless your favourite pastime is over clocking, stick to the recommendation of the processor manufacturer.

    Edited:

Well, the "Processor - FAQ" is right ... ... see my edit of post #1!

    and

    regards the i7 800-series, not the i7 900-series.

The inclusion of the word "manufacturer" makes that statement complete (IMO) :)

Sorry guys but I have mixed things up regarding Core 2 and Core i7.

    ... ... Christer ... ...

No matter what, the final statement still stands!

    I have edited posts #1 and #3 ... ... and I hope that I didn't make it worse ... ... !

I'll mark the tread as solved (sort of) and close it.
