    Hi,

I'm writing for a friend who connects with AOL and has problems with zipzappromos. I've spent an afternoon on the machine and can't get rid of it.

He has MS Antispyware Beta, Spybot 1.3, adaware 1.05 and spyware blaster running on the machine. I've also installed the ie-spyad registry update. The MS program shows up a couple of registry entries for egroup dialer, but following removal they're back after reboot, even if removed under safe mode.

One of the things that keeps cropping up is tmfjwnvck.exe. I can't find the file anywhere on the computer, and when I remove it from registry, it's back again after reboot. Might this be part of the problem?

Looking forward to your reply on this and thanks in advance. Here are the logs:

    Welcome to WindowsBBS d00bry :)

You nailed it! tmfjwnvck.exe is the problem, or at least the hidden one. Do the following in safe mode.

You need to remove the like named subkey under
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall

And the entire tmfjwnvck entry on the key
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run

Then click start>run and type cmd, hit enter. Then type (or copy this to text and paste it in would be best)
    attrib -r -h -s c:\windows\system32\tmfjwnvck.exe hit enter.

    Then type or paste
del c:\windows\system32\tmfjwnvck.exe and hit enter. Type Y to confirm if prompted and close.

Make sure you have hidden files and folders set to view, search the C:\Windows\system32 folder for any files named EGDACCESS***.* and delete them.
Clear the contents of all temp folders and C:\Windows\Prefetch, then run disk cleanup, checking all boxes.

Run an updated Ad-aware in full scan mode, removing all it finds.
Run an updated Spybot scan and fix all it finds.

Reboot and post a new log.

Thanks for the reply and the encouragement. Sorry it's taken me so long to respond, but I haven't had access to the infected computer. As per your suggesstion, I talked my friend through the following:

    1) Computer started in safe mode:
    2) Cleared all references to tmfjwnvck in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall
    3) No reference to tmfjwnvck found in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
    4) Attribute for tmfjwnvck.exe changed and file delete
    5) Search for EGDACCESS***.* found no match
    6) Temp folder and Prefetch folder cleared
    7) Adaware, Spybot and MS AntiSpyware Beta run on the result.
    8) Computer rebooted

After reboot, tmfjwnvck still appears under startup tab in MSConfig (which concerns me), however after 15 minutes of use, the computer apparently showed no pop-ups. The HijackThis log after the cleanup is as follows:

Your friend should first download and install SpywareBlaster. Enable all protections, check for updates and enable them too. Then download IESpyad.exe, double click to extract (it extracts to C:\IESpyad by default), open the folder, double click the ie-ads.reg file and allow it to merge into the registry.

He/she has HijackThis in a temporary directory and it still isn't unzipped. He should download HijackThis.exe from here and Save it to a permanent folder (I create a new folder in C:\ named HJT).

Scan again with HijackThis and place a check next to the following entries. Close ALL other windows and click fix.

    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [] C:\WINDOWS\Options\OEMReset.exe /Audit<<<Optional fix.....Resets OEM installation settings at bootup. Not required unless you're new to PC's.

    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [msnappau] "C:\Program Files\MSN Apps\Updater\01.02.3000.1001\en-us\msnappau.exe "

He/she should do the same as with tmfjwnvck for the following two files. Check the Uninstall keys too!

    c:\windows\system32\ljskfohuac.exe
    c:\windows\system32\vurflmw.exe

While in safe mode, again clear the contents of Prefetch and C:\Windows\Temp. Then click Start>run and type %temp% ,hit enter. Select all and delete.
Open the control panel, then the Java Plug-in, click the cache tab then clear. Depending on the control panel view, the plug-in may be found under other control panel options in the left pane.

Once back in Windows, go to the control panel>Add/Remove programs and uninstall the Java JRE runtime. Then go to the Sun Java Website and update the JRE. Current is 1.4.2_08

Scan your PC with RAV. If any files are infected, click the report button then copy and paste it here.

Run another HijackThis scan and post the log.

I also notice there is no Antivirus or firewall software running. VERY important something gets done about that, quickly!

    Hi Dave,

I think we're there. I don't know what happened with my last posting, but I think I may have given you the wrong hijackthis logfile. In any case, I've had a chance to look at my friend's computer and looked through things. I went into c:\windows\system32 and did attrib -r -h -s tmfjwnvck*.* and it showed up three data files which I've since deleted. HijackThis was showing the tmfjwnvck.exe -startup entry so I removed that again and searched the registry for anything with that name in it and nothing was found. After reboot the filename no longer appears under the msconfig startup tab. There was also no sign of those other odd filenames. Not in hijackthis, not in the registry and no files of that name in the system32 directory.

Here is the post cleanup hijackthis log:

Very many thanks for the help on this.
