Hi everyone. I'm a new user, so thank you all so much for your help.

As hapened to Magnus, I also have a problem with a website, asecurityupdate.com, invading my homepage and putting up annoying ads for me to buy anti spyware devices and stuff. After following your instructions (spyboat and ad aware) it went away but got back.I'll appreciate any help or guidance... Norton is not working at all with this... Thanks again!

    I forgot to mention...

I'm sorry,:( , but I forgot to mention that there is a program in the list displayed in ad/remove software (control pannel) named "Windows Safety Alert ". The first time I tried o remove it, it didn't allow me to. After I followed your basic instructions (spyboat and ad-aware running) the problem apeared o be solved, but the program was still listed. When I tried o remove it again, it started all over... I did the procedure for the second time and then run the Hijackthis which log is posted above.
    Hope somebody can help me...
    Have a wonderful weekend. :D

    Hi and welcome :)

Please download this file and save it to your desktop:

    http://siri.urz.free.fr/Fix/SmitfraudFix.exe

    Double-click SmitfraudFix.exe
Select option #1 - Search by typing 1 and press "Enter "; a text file will appear, which lists infected files (if present).
Please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply.

**If the tool fails to launch from the Desktop, please move SmitfraudFix.exe directly to the root of the system drive (usually C: ), and launch from there.

***Note : "process.exe" is detected by some antivirus programs (AntiVir, Dr.Web, Kaspersky) as a "RiskTool "; it is not a virus, but a program used to stop system processes. Antivirus programs cannot distinguish between "good" and "malicious" use of such programs, therefore they may alert the user.
You can safely allow this file.

Please don't run option 2 unless told to!

    Thanks :)

    Hi,

Sorry for delay. Connection problems here for me.

You should print out these instructions, or copy them to a NotePad file for reading while in Safe Mode, because you will not be able to connect to the Internet.

Next, please reboot your computer in "Safe Mode" by doing the following :
    [*]Restart your computer
    [*]After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually;
    [*]Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu with options should appear;
[*]Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press "Enter ".
    [*]Choose your usual account.

Once in Safe Mode, double-click on "SmitfraudFix.exe "
Select option #2 - Clean by typing 2 and press "Enter" to delete infected files.

You will be prompted : "Registry cleaning - Do you want to clean the registry ? "; answer "Yes" by typing Y and press "Enter" in order to remove the Desktop background and clean registry keys associated with the infection.

The tool will now check if wininet.dll is infected. You may be prompted to replace the infected file (if found); answer "Yes" by typing Y and press "Enter ".

The tool may need to restart your computer to finish the cleaning process; if it doesn't, please restart it into Normal Windows.
A text file will appear onscreen, with results from the cleaning process; please post report into your next reply along with new hijackthis log.

The report can also be found at the root of the system drive, usually at C:\rapport.txt

****Warning : running option #2 on a non infected computer will remove your Desktop background.

If your desktop background did get removed you can reset it like this:

Right click on desktop and choose "properties "
    Click "desktop" tab.
Choose the desktop pic from the list or "browse" to the one you want.

You may need reboot to take effect.

    Thanks ;)

    Hi,

Logs look good. How are things running?
Any more IE re-directs or warnings from systray?

Just a stray leftover to fix with Hijackthis.

    Start Hijackthis
    Run system scan and check:

    O2 - BHO: (no name) - {1FC80E00-41B0-4F74-BC16-2C83ED49CAC9} - C:\Documents and Settings\Samuel Belilty\Local Settings\Temp\temp.frDA1D\bpvol.dll (file missing)

Close all open windows except Hijack, click "fix checked ".

If Yahoo SearchProtection yells about a BHO being removed, allow it.

Restart PC and post fresh hijackthis log please.

    Thanks

    Problem solved!!!

My friend:) Blender... (I know I don't know you, but after such a huge favor I hope you don't mind me calling you friend...;) )
Everything is gone :D. Computer running smooth:D. You did an EXCELENT JOB!. I also checked Control Panel/Add-Remove Software, and the spyware was already also gone from there. Is there anything I can do to express my gratitude? Please let me know.
Before I let you go with the last log, I have a question:confused: . I don't know if you can talk about brands, but if so, what would you reccomend me to do about my Norton System Work and Firewall? None of them detected this malware, nevertheless stopped it:eek: . It was uncaple of recognize it regardles its absolutely obvious presence  . And their "TECHNICAL SUPPORT" (????) asked me to pay almost $70 to fix it remotely. Yes, to pay again to fix something that their product didn't catch... The product that I paid for PRECISELY TO CATCH THIS!!!!!!
Any comments? I don't want to put you in any predicament, and I apologize if that's the case. If you can't comment, just don't. I apreciate all what you have already done, regardless...
Again, thank you so much. Let me know if there is anyway for me to return this favor.
Here is the latest log for your review:

Sorry to bring this up again, but I found the guidelines on how to remove this annoying program very usefull. I am faced with only one problem...

Before you had mentioned that there might be some lingering effects of the virus. Although I believe that the program does not exist any longer (the icon on the taskbar is gone and it doesn't appear in the program files), my homepage still redirects to the false security homepage, I still get the popup warning telling me to download more spyware to fix spyware, and I still can't get rid of the 'protection bar'. I DID run HiJackThis and look for the afforementioned object that was blamed. I did not find it. I'm not sure how this works, but here's the HJT log:

As you can see it is not there.

I ran AdAware and it detected over 250 malicious files, all of which I removed, all of which no longer show up on the scan. I restarted the computer. Still, the toolbar, homepage, and warning stay. This is especially frustrating because my homepage is of course Google, which I can no longer access.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Hi Samility,

    Sorry for delay.

Glad things are working well. :)

    Shadowulf:

You should start your own thread because it is confusing trying to do 2 logs in the same thread.
Click the "new thread" button in this forum: (top left)

    http://www.windowsbbs.com/forumdisplay.php?f=41

Copy/paste your hijackthis log there with description of your problem and someone will be along as soon as they can. You do have SmitFraud infection that will require a specific tool to remove it.

    Samility:

    Your Hijackthis log looks good.
You asked about opinion on antivirus protection/firewall protection.
Just keep in mind no one AV can catch everything. Some of these malwares update themselves daily (or more often) and until the AV companies get a sample of the malware they cannot effectively add these threats to their database.

I myself use Nod32 on one machine for AV (paid program) and Avast on another. (free)
I have also used AVG and AntiVir on other computers with decent success.
For Firewall I use Zone Alarm Pro/ They do have a free version which works well.

I find Norton products use too much RAM. I don't like too much their (lack of) support either.

    AntiVir:

Do keep in mind to only use one antivirus product and one firewall otherwise you will run into conflicts.

For antispyware products (free/pay for) there is a list here:

    http://www.spywarewarrior.com/rogue_anti-spyware.htm#trustworthy

    I like AVG Antispyware.

After a few reboots and checking to see that all is well; it is highly recommended to reset your system restore to remove any possible backed up infected files there.

    Right click "my computer "
    Click "properties "
    Click "system restore" tab
Checkmark "turn off system restore "
    Hit apply> ok> ok.

    Reboot

Go back and turn system restore back on by removing the check, hit apply, and OK.

A new restore point is created at this time.
You will not be able to restore computer to any earlier than today.

Since the HJT log is clean, here is some great information from Tony Klein, Texruss, ChrisRLG, TeMerc and Grinler to help you stay clean and safe online:
