    Greetings folks!

This is my first post here.

I'm in a bit of a pickle as my computer's monitor goes into sleep mode after booting up. Now, I've reinstalled Windows XP on it and after installing all of the drivers, when it comes to restarting, it still it goes into sleep mode.

I am crying virtual tears in anticipation of a response.

I get the screen in VGA mode, but when I try to adjust the settings it goes straight to sleepmode again.

I also have gone into BIOS and tweaked the 'Power Save' options, as well as turning off the hibernation features of the computer.

I have no qualms about re-installing all of the programs again if you can suggest a way to do it which means I get the screen back again.

Also, the screen does work as I can run my laptop through it.

Please, pretty please, can anybody help, Crabby?

Crabby - Welcome to the Board :)

Since you have proved that the monitor is functional the problem probably lies with the graphics card - the monitor is not receiving a signal from the computer.

Presumably you reinstalled Windows because of this problem - did you make a repair install, a clean install after formatting the hard drive or reinstalled using a recovery CD? If you made a clean install did you install the chipset drivers for the motherboard.

Given that the problem existed before you reinstalled Windows I would suspect the graphics card - it may have failed.

Do you know if the graphics chip is on the motherboard or do you have a plug in graphics card? If the graphics are on a plug in card open the case and carefully remove the card - clean the contacts with a soft pencil eraser - clean down the contacts, not across and then degrease with an alcohol based fluid. Refit the card and test.

When you connected the monitor to the laptop did you use the same cable that originally connected it to the computer? If the answer is yes that proves that the cable is OK.

Post back with some answers to the questions above.

    Hi Pete!

    Many thanks for the reply.

Yes, the cable was the same one from the computer so that rules that one out.

I will follow your instructions to clean the graphics card and let you know of the results.

Again, thank you for taking the time to reply.
