I have a Dell Inspiron Laptop 1000 running windows Xp. With Celeron 2.2 Ghz
My problem is the screen goes black after no particular time. I can still communicate on IM so I know the computer is still actually running. The only way I can seem to get it to come back on is shutting off the computer and rebooting. While this is erradict it is very annoying. Any ideas ?

At a guess I would say a hardware problem rather than a software problem - build up of heat - not necessarily a lot, causing the graphics chip to duck out or a connection somewhere between mobo and screen. May even be the backlight failing.

Regardless you should reinstall the graphics drivers - get them from Dell website - and see if that cures the problem.

But you could attach it to an external VGA monitor to see if issue still exists.

Additionally I would reset the display by removing all Wallpapers Backgrounds and screen savers even change the resolution to a higher or lower save it then set the resoloutions back to what you want.

    As generic as possible.

Power Mnagement is very important to a laptop!

But turn off Power management, reboot and turn back on and recheck settings.
