I have a GX260 (SFF) and the monitor output isn't working. (The monitor's fine). I was thinking that I could get a new video card, but can't find one for the Optiplex Low-Profile PC. There's only one slot to add anything. Any suggestions?

NewEgg.com has many low profile video cards. Have you looked there?

    Before you waste money...

How do you know it's the graphics card and not something else?

Try clearing the CMOS. Do a search of this forum for the term CMOS if you want some leads. I always check in the system's User Guide/manual for how to clear the CMOS, but some manuals are getting very low on information nowadays.

What is the whole story behind your issue.

Did the pc work fine for a long time then one day you had no video?

Work you working on ANY part of the pc and then lost video?

You don't need one to reset the CMOS :)

Remove the CMOS battery for ~30 seconds.

Check in the motherboard manual if any jumpers need to be switched or temporarily removed/shorted as well.

Then how do you know the monitor is fine? I would try another monitor on your system and see what happens.

I have used the monitor on another PC, vice-versa. Works fine...

    Great! Just verifying assumptions.

The problem is, we don't have enough information. I'm with Steve, "What is the whole story behind your issue? It seems pretty certain the monitor is fine. But at this point, we don't know if the current graphics failed, or if the computer is not fully turning on, perhaps suggesting a power supply problem, or something else.

Does the sleeping monitor wake up when you power on the computer? Does anything appear on the screen? Or is it stay black from the moment you hit power?

Does it appear to be getting power and making it all the way through the boot process? Note that fans, lights, and drives spinning only means the fans, lights and drives are getting +12VDC. It does not mean the CPU, RAM or the rest of the motherboard are getting their required +5VDC and +3.3VDC.

You need to determine your exact model number to know exactly what you have. It appears the SFF version of the GX260 supports AGP graphics. But it also only has a 160W power supply. So if you need a new card, you'll have to take careful watch to ensure it is thrifty at the power pumps.

You might want to pop open the case and make sure it is free of heat-trapping dust. Then you can verify a power supply connection didn't come loose, perhaps during transit, or from repeated vibrations through the floor. Just ensure to unplug from the wall, then touch bare metal of the case interior to discharge any static before reaching inside.

Well I finally got around to fixin' the Optiplex. 1st thing I did was to pop out the battery & put in a fresh one (2032). That was the problem. Not that it was dead, but I needed to reboot the CMOS like ya'll said. (Figured I might as well try it with a new battery!) Thanks for all the help... Moral: Check the 'lil things FIRST! :)
