Monitor goes black upon Normal XP Startup

    [FONT= "Century Gothic"][/FONT] Upon startup of Normal mode, my HP laptop with Windows XP/Vista completes the functions but the monitor goes black immediately before the desktop appears. I can hear the sounds of the desktop, just can not see it.

    Connections are good, Memory Diagnostics has been run in Safe mode (no errors or issues with memory), and defrag will not run in Safe mode.

    I have not installed any new hardware or software nor have I downloaded anything in the last six months.

    What else could be the issue and what should be tried??

    Hi Wally310, Welcome to Windowsbbs! :)

    When you boot up in normal mode with the labtop have you tried using an exernal monitor and seeing if that works? If that doesn't work that it could be a graphics problem. Try updating your graphics drivers to their latest version and see if that makes any difference.

    I don't have access to a exterior monitor. I will try the graphics download. Can this be done in safe mode?

    You can try and see if updating the graphics driver will work in Safe Mode. If that doesn't work then I'm not sure what else to suggest.

    Shine a flashlight into the screen. Can you see a faint image of the display? If so, you have a backlight/inverter problem. Any competent technician can fix it in about 1 hour. Parts cost from $50 to $150.

    Some HP’s, like mine, use the fn+ f4 key to switch between an external display and the laptop screen.

    On boot computer will remember the last setting and behave like you’re describing.

    Might have pressed the keys by mistake – look in manual for your key combination and give it a try.
