Just got myself out of a hard place. Downloaded a Monitor for CPU and FAN Speed, etc., from a recommendation in PC World Webpage. The name was "MMonitor." Install instructions indicated that once restarted after install it would do it's thing and show what was going on. My trouble was it never restarted. PC would try and then turn off. Got into Safe Mode, Restored from yesterday and now all is well. Learned a lesson I suppose, but how does one know what is good or bad? Thought something that appeared with PC World might be OK.

Are there any such Monitors that someone would recommend? I would like to see and know the heat factor and any other things that might be reported.

    Mudd,

I had problems with both the above mentioned motherboard monitors. I just couldn't get them to function properly, I think it's because this tower has OEM motherboard.
Try this... Download "Everest Home Edition" HERE . It's *free*. Extract the program to the folder of your choice (don't need to install). In the 'Menu tree' open 'Computer' then 'Sensor'. This will give you a list of temperature readings, fan speeds, voltages, etc. This is the program that replaced AIDA32. It gives you just a ton of information about your computer.

    Mr B and Sparrow

I think I have ran across a problem that I can't solve, maybe because of the Dell made Motherboard.

The link from Sparrow with the program won't run either. The Wizard just won't run when it comes to configuring the Motherboard. At least it didn't disable my PC like the other did.

Mr B, I have the Everest Home Program and it come up blank when clicking on the Sensor. Nothing shows, evening after waiting patiently.

I suspect it's something with Dell Motherboards. Maybe they don't want me to know how hot it is in their Tower!! So if it doesn't smoke and smell bad I'll just forget about these little things.

    Thanks to each of you.

    Mudd,

That doesn't sound promising. Your motherboard might not have the sensors to monitor. Take a look in your BIOS and see if you can find any temperature readings or if there is something you have to enable for an external monitor.

Mr B - Just went into the Setup Page and there is nothing at all about what we are discussing. Have not seen anything such as this before. Do believe Dell purposefully hides a lot of info. Bet there is a way to see more if one knew the proper procedure. But, nothing about sensors, saw no indication of temp, fan, voltages, etc.

Think I'll leave this problem/difficulty and wait for something else to worry about............

    Thanks for the help.

How old is the computer. If it has temp, voltage, etc. monitors you should be able to access them in the bios and see what the current temps are. Temperatures may be higher in the bios than in windows because XP comes with cpu cooling software that's not running unless windows is running but the temps should be there.

Zander - The PC is or was purchased new in Jan 2005. It's a Dell 8400 3.2 GHz w/HT, and the Motherboard is identified only as Dell Motherboard DMI. I get this from the Everest Program.

Now maybe I don't know where to look at in the System to see what I need to see. When you say, "look in the BIOS," I take that to mean "look in the Setup Information." Is that incorrect? If not so please direct me.

My previous PC was a Dell and I tried all the Monitor programs I could find to see heat, fan speed, and stuff but never could get one to work. That's why I've concluded that Dell must make their Motherboards in a way that these things are able to be displayed.

The unit has XP Microsoft Media Edition which I think is XP Home with some whistles and bells added.

Looking forward to your reply on this.

Shadowhawk - I tried Speed Fan 4. The window indicates "no chips detected" and there is no information. Tried them all. Back to, "Dell doesn't want me to know" jargon. So I'll rest this one.

    Thanks for the reply.

Just checked the technical manual and it appears that there's no heat sensor on the mobo (it's not mentioned anyway). The mobo manufacturer isn't mentioned (I'm reasonably sure it's not Dell, most likely outsourced), so apparently no monitor will work. You're getting interested in hardware; maybe you'll build your next computer from good parts like many of the members here do.

If nature would oblige me I would like to do that, build my own. I'm about to old to learn what I need to be able to do that. Over the Hill as some say. In my seventies so will probably just read, day-dream about things like this. I came alone before all this super technology. I really enjoy it and for an Old Codger I suppose I'm a little ahead of my time. I try to be anyway.

    Thanks for all the help.
