I am trying to fix an old pc. I have formatted the HDD and installed Windows 98SE.

I installed a rockwell internal pci modem, when I click "more info" in modem diagnostics all seems to be fine.

When I try to connect with dial-up I get:

"Error 630: The computer is not receiving a response from the modem. Check that the modem is plugged in, and if necessary, turn the modem off, and then turn it back on. "

    HEEEEEELP!!

    thanks in advance

    Colin

Error 630 is mostly related to incorrect dial up configuration.
A Firewall that is not working properly can do the same.
Your ISP should be able to guide you through a new Dial up connection.

I have had this one when connecting a modem to a PC that has
had another brand of modem in the past.
In Device Manager, "this device is working properly" - but it isn't.
In Device Manager, remove the modem and reboot.
In Control Panel click Modem and let Windows search/install.
It is not particularly important to get an exact match with the modem eg on one PC I have an Aztech 56k external that now
thinks it's a Rockwell and works fine ...
    regards

The Aztech 56k is a Rockwell...that is, it has a rockwell chipset on it, but made by Aztech.
Rockwell/Conexant have NEVER made modems, just chips.
