I have a conexant softk56 pci modem. When I log onto the internet in windows 98, the keyboard locks up in all programs. I can use the mouse. When I disconect from the internet, the keyboard comes back. Any ideas? I am using an hp pavilion.

Off the top of my head, the first thing I'd do is open "device manager" and make sure my keyboard and my modem are not sharing the same resource such as an irq. I noticed you have described yourself as experienced so you may have already done this. In that case you need to be more specific about your devices as this may be an oem make/model problem.

Listing what you have already done in an effort to fix this may also cut done on the number of "been there_done that" suggestions that may be offered.

    Thanks for the suggestions Ann.
I have a HP Pavilion. I have changed comports, downloaded updated drivers, disabled the current configuration, and reinstalled another modedm to force different settings. I cannot change the irq or the memory settings. My hair is not all out yet, but it is getting close. Next step-- the registry.

What Pavilion model or "Pavilion what "?

Is your keyboard a standard no "Bells and whistles" or is it one of the Enhanced Fancy System integrated ones with lots of buttons for various functions?

Just need to do a "prescreen_looksee search" for any known problems that may be associated with your particular keyboard and computer [Pavilion]. In case this is an enhanced keyboard with some kind of internet functions built in, there may be an option setting that should be turned on or off.

Also... when you say you "cannot change the irq or the memory settings" does this mean that your keyboard and modem do share some resources? If that's the case then it's my bet this is the problem and we'll have to concentrate on fixing that and figuring out how to change one or the others shared irq.

    UPDATE through email correspondence.

Problem ended up being a keyboard manager program. He subsequently uninstalled the program and the problem went away.

Thanks bhovey for the update and sharing the final outcome fix that worked for you. Glad it wasn't going to be a resource conflict. Them critters can be hard to clear up. Your most welcome for the small part I played in this as you found and fixed the bugger yourself. Glad all is well.
