A few weeks ago while downloading e-mail using Thunderbird the dial up connection was lost. Since then Thunderbird had been still downloading files even though the computer was not connected to the internet. I deleted Thunderbird from the computer and I'am still unable to connect to the internet. The message reads connection in use. I have removed the modem, reinstalled and rebooted several times and still receive the message connection in use. I have a dial tone and can use both a phone and my laptop on the phone side of the modem without any problem. I have a Dell Dimension E520 , OS Windows Vista , Conexant D850 PCI V.92 , Driver version 7.58.0.50.

Hi and welcome to the BBS,

What does the error message say exactly? (From memory :)), there are several that could relate to different problems.

Is there any more information for this error? Does it say what program is throwing it up?

I have not come across those output "codes" before.

"Modem Diagnostic Tool ", I don't know that either. Do you mean Control Panel -> Phone and Modem Options and using the Diagnostics (tab) for the modem?

There are many places where you can find information about the modem or the connection and I am not sure where you mean. You will need to expand on your information about "what happens ".

    I'll take a shot...
Try installing Thunderbird again. (I hope you uninstalled it and didn't delete the folder and files, since you said you deleted it).

You can try uninstalling and reinstalling the modem's software. You should find a listing for it in Control Panel -> Programs and Features.

Something appears to be holding the port/connection open. Check for other programs, online games might be one. It may possibly be caused by malware.

When you reinstall the modem, make sure it goes to COM port 3 or 4 before trying to connect to the internet. Look in Control Panel -> Phone and Modem Options -> Modems, highlight the modem and select Properties. (Reboot the system several times if it is using COM port 1 or 2.)

The other areas you should check are Control Panel -> Internet Options -> Connections.
Control Panel -> Network and Sharing Center.
