using Win 98 the modem cannot seem to get a dieal tone.
I am more familiar with cable broadband connections.
running Win 98 SE. Ordinary external rockwell 33.6 fax modem. Modem works and dials out with a Win95 computer.
have set up the connection repeatedly every way I can. No matter what cannot get a dial tone.
what setting am I missing ?

    no dialtone = modem death

    Hello Schamish,
I assume you've listened to the passthrough side of the modem to see that there is, in fact, a dial tone. I don't mean to sound insulting. There have been only a couple of different things i've seen which have caused no dial tone. One, there is a problem with the phone line such as a short or a telco issue. Two, the relay that closes to connect the telco line(pickup the phone) inside the modem is dead. The latter can be caused by a surge in the phone system which occurs more often than most people know. Try another modem as this issue most likely not a setting.
