I have a Compaq 1675 Notebook and use dial-up internet. The connection speed seems to be 26400. How do I know if the settings for the modem are offering me the best performance? There seems to be several options for a speed. I never changed any of this so it is whatever was originally installed. Also: I am letting Windows manage the memory. Could I do better if I specified the settings? The computor has a total of 192meg of memory. Any advice?

Thanks in advance for your help.

Your speed is almost certainly a function of your telephone line and how many sub-stations are between you and the phone company central switching equipment.

I've forgotten the specifics but there is some magic number (4, 5, 6, something in that range) where your maximum possible speed drops from around 50Kbps to what you are seeing. I had a phone tech explain the whole thing to me years back and it made perfect sense at the time but that's about all I can remember.
