Compliments of the season to you all
I do hope you'll be able to help
I'm using Win 2K Pro, Dell laptop with internal 3Com 10/100 Lan & 56K mini PCI modem
When trying to dial ISP via standard digital phone connection, I get dial tone for approx 2 sec and then nothing.....
If I disconnect the phone cable and plug in quickly, modem starts to dial and I connect
I have reload all required drivers from Dell web site, also reinstalled modem, checked all necessary setting etc, to no avail
I do hope you may have solution

Most telephone lines are not digital, and if you are using an analog modem with a digital phoneline, you could ruin it.
That said, since you are able to connect after removing and reinstalling the phone wire, is it possible you might have a bad connection? Either on the modem port itself or on the phone line.
